How to make a living with online writing
November 22, 2022 - If you can, consider becoming a product reviewer. In this position, you’ll check out different products and write about them. You’ll dive into the pros and cons of each and point out features that people might not know about. And since you often get to keep review products, it’s another perk to consider on top of your pay. Can you take complex topics and break them down for the average reader to understand? If you do, you might make a great technical writer.

Hello

I'm almost 20 and very new to this industry, at first I sought gigs on facebook but they pay very low, like very very low and I want to know if there are other places I can find gigs from?

I don't have any experience in writing, professionally, because I haven't written much or sold my work, basically an absolute beginner.

Can you tell me how your journey started? Or just share tips?

Thank you

I’m curious as well. I’ve done a couple things on Upwork and have a couple really good academic pieces, but Upwork is a pain due to most being low paid jobs alongside 20% being taken out and academic writing isn’t helping very much in terms of experience or samples.

Pick a profitable niche that you know/like Start a blog in said niche - buy the domain off Namecheap or GoDaddy or other domain registrars. Host it on Wordpress/Wix. Get a theme off themeforest or something. And market through reddit/Pinterest. Watch YouTube videos on making a blog and the different plugins to use, SEO, keyword research and building domain authority. WRITE EVERY DAY. Try to post 2-3x a week on the blog. Try to get 100+ posts each at 1000+ words. READ A LOT TOO. Start with “On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft - Stephen King” and “The Elements of Style - William Strunk”. Make personal blog posts on Medium, Wordpress, LinkedIn, Contently, Blogger.com etc and try to get them curated if you can (having 1000+ words with lots of pictures, multiple H1 headings and H2/H3 subheadings with backlinks). Make a personal blog hosted on Wordpress and have a portfolio page of all the posts you’ve made on the other platforms. Search blogs and platforms in your niche on google “write for us”. Pitch an idea. Do guest posts. Apply for freelancing jobs with local ad agencies with a link to your portfolio/personal blog and a mock post. Optimise your LinkedIn and cold email agencies with a pitch. TL;DR: WRITE A LOT, READ A LOT. MARKET YOURSELF.

September 19, 2021 -

I write a lot in my free time and I have my own collection of stories and the like. I don’t have a degree in English however, as I’m working as a nurse now. I do like my job, albeit these past 18 months have sucked. If down the line though, I decided that I didn’t want to work in healthcare anymore, should I go back to school for an English degree? Or does that not really matter as much as being a good writer and being incredibly lucky and fortunate to get yourself liked and published? How do you guys get yourselves out there? I’d love to take one of my stories and try and make something more out of it. There are days where I want nothing more than to just wake up early when it’s nice and quiet out and just write.

Idk, just a thought. I’m working tonight and it’s been as depressing as ever and my mind is elsewhere. Hope you guys are well.

If you want to publish a novel, here are the steps: write your first draft (this you write for yourself and yourself only) Make your second draft (here you start writing for others) write as many drafts as it needs. You will know it is done when changing anything doesn't improve the story but makes it worse or just different. Get beta readers and get their feedback to improve your story. Now here is where things split up depending on weather you would like to self-publish or traditional publish. if self publish: 5) Start marketing. Start building hype. Ideally you should already have a social media platform if you want to self publish. But if you don't have any, now is the time. 6) Hire the services of a professional editor. They will help improve your story quite a bit and polish your work to a sheen. 7) Get yourself a cover, either make one yourself or hire the services of a graphics designer. 8) self publish, get your isbn number, push push push your work on social media. If traditional publishing: 5) it would still help if you start marketing here. Publishers do market your work but usually only if they see initial sales. Where do you get those? That's right online marketing. 6) Send it to literary agent. Rake in all the rejection. dwell in them. Learn to love them. Until one godsent idiot does accept your work. 7) the agent will then use their connections to get your work through the doors of publishing houses. Get ready for round 2 of rejections. Although if your agent is worth their salt, the round 2 won't be as long as round one. 8) Now your publisher will go through their own rounds of editors, graphic designers, marketers and other such service. 9) your book is published, congractulations, you have made it. Now comes the time to sell. your. books. Your publisher is going to make it easier to get to interested people but it is you who will have to make the sales in the beginning. You will have to talk to people and entice, beg or force them to buy your books. All of it seems difficult. And it is. In fact, I have blunted some edges as to not scare you away. But in life if you want to earn a lot of money and get famous doing something that you want to do, you will have to fight the whole world to get it. My advice: get used to rejection. And get used to improving what you thought was perfect.

Wake up early and write. The first and most important way to work toward a writing career is to write and read as much as you can. Read widely. Take a closer look at the books/stories/articles/movies you enjoy and try to figure out what makes them work. Also take a close look at who created them. What else have they made, etc? Good writing groups DO help, but they’re not essential. What is is to read, write, and submit. Your abilities and knowledge will grow as you go along, and with a little luck, you’ll be able to figure out how to get into the field.
