Maybe around 6 months ago I was talking with a guy at the local Woodcraft about a combo sander but he talked me out of it because he didn't believe it to be a terribly useful product due to the size. He recommended this disc sander . He personally had one and knew another guy that worked there who had one and felt it could do just about any job a combo sander could do. I do see that the 12" disc sander shows up as being clearance/closeout. My local Woodcraft still carries it for $200, but here is another option for a big disc sander I found doing a quick search. Been making some gifts for family members the past few weeks. With no bench-top sanding machine, I've been doing it all by hand, either with a block or using my handheld DeWalt vibrating sander. I've come to the conclusion that I need to stop doing this to save my sanity. So, I'm in the market for a new/used disc+belt sander. Not looking to start a shop, just some small projects kind of thing. So max budget is probably $250 or so. I like the idea of fixed platforms with guide rails for both disc and belt options, but it seems these features only come with the more expensive models. Anyone have knowledge/experience/opinions with models that might fit my description?

Personally, I haven't found a good new combo sander that was what I wanted any cheaper than this, which is $400 + shipping. http://www.grizzly.com/products/Combination-Sander-6-x-48-Belt-9-Disc-Z-Series/G1014Z I ended up scouring craigslist for a number of months, and ended up bagging an 80's era delta 31-695 combo belt-disc sander for ~$200. I am very happy with the delta, it's incredibly useful to have.

August 8, 2023 - I had a very nice 12" disk/6x48 combo sander in my shop for a few years. I found I used it maybe three or four times in that time period and ended up selling it to reclaim the space. It was a great machine (Grizzly...the only one of their machines I have owned) but I wasn't finding a need to use it. My suggestion is to think about this carefully and what you might use it for. If you determine that either the disc or the belt will get the majority of the work, get a machine that does that...a big disc or a nice edge sander.
