More expensive tools are generally made with higher quality materials: Switches, bearings, brushless motors, metal parts instead of plastic. All intended for longevity of the tool and precision in operation. A well made tool is also more pleasurable to work with because the adjustments stay where you set them and it has enough power to do the job long time without burning out. Belt sander recommendations?
If you want a belt sander built like a tank that can perform 25+ years of regular active service, the only player left in the game is Makita. There are no other top end belt sanders, although Porter Cable is quite good. The upper middle market fell away many years ago with the influx of cheaply manufactured ones, leaving only the very most robust to survive. DeWalt hasn't made a belt sander for about 12 years now. Bosch & Metabo still make options, but not for North American voltage. Bosch left the belt sander game in North America years ago. I'm just making the assumption you're in NA because of your use of the $ sign, I realise I might be wrong. Whatever option you choose, you should know that the better belt sanders have cork and graphite pads between the steel bottom plate and the belt. The cork goes between the graphite and the steel, and the graphite faces the belt to help create a low-friction surface. Replacement pads are inexpensive and should be stocked at dedicated tool/woodworking/industrial stores. Of the Makita models there is one that is a bit of a step down and it's the 9911KX1. This is a basic 3x18 UK-made model, whereas the others are larger, heavier, Japanese-made tools. If you are specifically doing flooring, just flooring, the most popular model is the 9924DB. It can take a 4" wide belt even though it is a 3"x24" sander, is heavy enough that its own weight gives the correct pressure, has a really long cord and a fixed RPM (no variable speed). Tracking will be bang on 25 years from now. More on reddit.com
Belt sander worth it for multiple projects?
A belt sander saves time, but it can also be too aggressive. If you use a belt sander, you'll want to finish up sanding with a random orbital sander to get rid of any residual sanding marks.

r/woodworking on Reddit: What's the difference between cheap and expensive belt sanders?
May 29, 2023 -
I recently found myself needing a belt sander. I was tempted to buy a nice Makita sander, but wasn't sure if I'd actually use it beyond my current project, so I ended up getting a really cheap WEN. I used it today and it worked great, so now I'm curious: what would I have gotten out of the $260 Makita sander vs the $40 WEN?
Edit to add: both sanders are corded, same belt size.

When you've got the trigger locked and you're 20 feet high on pump jacks hitting the end of a log on a cabin and it takes off, the difference is you're just out 40$ versus 260. However, a portal cable would survive. Ask how i know.... When you're knocking down 1000 BF of reclaimed barn wood for an afternoon, the WEN is not going to make it. It's an "occasional" use DIY tool, not something you're going get much use of in an afternoon of sanding a boat transom, etc.... I have found that with the cheap tools, they underperform/don't last and I end up getting the better tool anyways, so now i just go straight to the better tool.
