Hi! My husband and I are 32 and travelling to Scotland next Fall 2024. Am between renting a car to cruise around highlands for a couple days versus a guided tour.

We are not ypically tour people. We like to walk around, explore. But I have heard great things about Rabbies, Hairy Coo.

Any information is great. Would love to know if their tours are literally sitting on a bus for 3 days straight ;)

Tours are good for a quick look around but IMO any “guided” anything is my idea of hell. I’d always recommend hiring a car and doing my own exploring on my own time without having to talk to be people I really can’t be arsed talking to.

I was born in America, with American family, but I’ve lived in Edinburgh for twenty years. I’ve gone on a few of these tours with visitors and personally I think they’re pretty great if you don’t have a car (and honestly, I wouldn’t recommend trying to drive over here - far too stressful!). I’ve only done the one-day tours but a friend has done the overnight Eilean Donan tour and enjoyed it. I would say the Loch Ness Tour is a lot of driving, and Loch Ness isn’t as pretty as Loch Lomond, so I’d skip that one. I don’t like whisky but relatives have recommended the highland whisky & castles tour they took. I think the operators are all broadly equivalent in price and value. Stick to the ones that are smallish vans rather than buses. Otherwise, I personally think the West Highlands are more beautiful than the eastern highlands, but that’s obviously subjective. And the Borders is also very beautiful - Timberbush Tours offers an option with Roslyn Chapel, Melrose Abbey, and Abbotsford which I’d recommend for history and literature buffs.
