Never pea gravel, you want crushed stone as the angular pieces lock together and you need minus material instead of clean or washed or it won't compact well to a stable base. I would use 3/4" minus. Answer from bentrodw on reddit.com

r/landscaping on Reddit: Best gravel for a fire pit seating area?
October 6, 2024 -

I am in the process of turning part of what was a massive flower bed into a fire pit area. Just a solo stove so don’t need to build a fire pit itself, i was just going to put some kind of round slab in the middle for it to sit on and then a gravel area for seating around it.

A quick google suggests things like crushed limestone or pea gravel.

Can someone recommend something that works well - sturdy for seating and walking on, not going to go all over the place, plus good drainage ideally?

Small rock base for sitting/fire pit area? | Rokslide Forum
I am looking at creating a sitting area in my back yard with a fire pit. Probably going to get one of the smokeless fire pits. I like the idea of pavers but hate the idea of doing it myself, properly. The other option is doing a small rock base. Has anyone done this? Any regrets? More on rokslide.com

Carefully add a layer of gravel on top of the landscape fabric, making sure the fabric doesn't fold up. The gravel should come up to just below the top edge of the cobblestone border. Smooth it with a garden rake. Add the finishing touches. Finally, place your fire pit in the middle and add chairs around it.

February 18, 2025 - Im planning on doing this once the ground thaws. My FP sits in a grassy wet spot of the yard that doesn't really dry out till late spring. I'm gonna build it up a couple inches, put some fabric down, and use small river gravel. I have the grade so I might dig a French drain under it as well.

Fire Pit Area - preparation for pebbles/stones
November 18, 2024 - So, firepit envy aside... yes, absolutely you want weedmat or drainage/geotextile fabric. This in-fact stops the pebbles for sinking into the substrate. Make sure the roadbase is well compacted too otherwise you'll likley end up with some soft spots and hollows. That sounds roughly right re; volume. Maybe a little high. 22 sq/m x 50mm (22 x .05) =1.1 cubic metres. The average for pebbles & gravels is 1.5 tonnes to the cubic metre so 1.1 x 1.5 = 1.65 tonnes.
