Took a trip to a Herman Miller dealer the other day and discussed the Eames Lounge Chair for a bit. I sat in two chairs: one with prone leather and one in MCL. The prone was surprisingly uncomfortable to me--I'm really surprised it's offered as a premium leather. The MCL was smooth and supple, but the dealer said it would be discontinued in August and was prone to scratching. I tested a swatch of 2100 series leather, and I found it quite soft and nice. I noticed that other types of leather exist via DWR, but the samples were not on hand at the dealer.
I'm curious what folks think is the best leather option. I definitely want something softer than prone, but durability is also helpful. And are other leather variations limited to DWR, or should they be accessible via a dealer?
Edited to add: I'm keen on oiled palisander, and I know that limits some leather options. I am flexible, though--if there's a leather that's leaps better than 2100 leather, I could downgrade from the oiled model.

I had a similar experience with the leathers when I tried these chairs at DWR.. thought the MCL was more comfortable. But that being said any of these full grain leathers should last you a long time and even the Prone will likely break in and wear into a very comfortable leather over time. One thing that helped me feel comfortable about my leather choice was learning more about leather and how it's produced. This website does a good job showing/explaining the difference between full grain and corrected grain. Basically full grain is the outer layer of the cow hide without any buffing/imperfections being fixed. Corrected grain could also be the outer layer of cow hide but might have some imperfections fixed, or it could be completely buffed down and then stamped with a full grain look. The MCL and Prone are both full grain. 2100 is corrected grain. I'm not sure if there are any actual disadvantages to corrected grain, but I personally wanted full grain. Also I didn't like how thin 2100 leather was. In the end I went with MCL because it seemed good enough for me and from a collectability/value perspective it being discontinued was a big plus. Just a note if you didn't know already... you can go to an authorized Herman Miller dealer and get the chair for ~33% off list price. I paid $4700 (+ taxes and shipping, which you'd pay from DWR anyway) for standard, walnut, MCL espresso leather configuration .

Checkout Stressless. Around half the price of an Eames and more comfortable, especially if you are taller. They come in quite a few different styles, and I’d suggest having him sit in some if you can find a local dealer as the different styles do have a different feel to them all. For the last few years I’ve been considering one. I went to a party back in May and the owner of the house had one. I asked him about it and he said he bought it in 1994. It was heavily colored where his head and arms touched, but I’m guessing he didn’t put a lot of time into conditioning and cleaning. He told me I had to sit in it and try it out, which I did. It was definitely in great shape as far as the padding and features. When you consider it was 28 years old it was amazing. It was his favorite chair, and he practically lived in it. His wife also had one in a room in part of the house where the party wasn’t happening. I bought one in June, very happy with it. But I got a style I didn’t expect while shopping online since when I tried them in a store the one I thought I would prefer wasn’t quite as comfortable as the one I ended up getting. I purchased the Wing model.
