The downside is that depending on the amount of data you are trying to index it can get fairly expensive. The major benefit with Splunk however is that the sheer number of plugins and integrations available for it allows you to get useful data and insight without investing a top of time or learning Splunk SPL to build proper queries. · Graylog is definitely my go to favorite lower-cost/free option. Graylog Enterprise will give you a supported instance, and the newer Graylog Illuminate option is pretty awesome and will integrate really well with your PAN equipment. If you don't have a budget to really work with, the free Graylog Open will give you a good SIEM solution that is well documented and has various integrations available for it without any cost outside of hardware.

Well I guess it is not about the tool it is about the idea of SIEMs. What it is capable and what not? Where are the borders? Tooling is cool, but SIEMs only work if you can use the data. I guess install any Tool, start collecting all your Logs and start digging for relevant informations, generalize them and build so a good platform of possible use-cases. More on reddit.com

I’m curious which products you evaluated to arrive at AlienVault and Sentinel? I don’t know much about Sentinel, it’s not a product I see discussed often. I haven’t been a big fan of AlienVault since they were purchased by AT&T. But it’s a free product, so you get what you pay for.
But definitely curious what other products you evaluated and removed from your list.

Hey guys, one of the college clubs I'm in - is wanting to setup a SIEM for all of our servers. We want the main console/server to be Windows based. Most of the SIEM's I am seeing, the central console/server has to be linux. We wanted to is Velociraptor but that seems to be linux based. I know Velociraptor supports windows, but only window endpoints/agent but not a central console. Any free SIEM tool's that it's center console can be installed on a Windows Server 2019?

Is there a particular reason it has to be installed on windows? You'd have a lot more options if you set up a virtual machine on whatever server you're using for the SIEM, especially with open source stuff. First one that comes to mind is security onion. It's uses the elk stack (elasticsearch, logstash, kibana) which is a very popular choice for open source SIEMs. Also what is your purpose for it? Velociraptor is good forensics software since it can collect data from many endpoints, but I'm not aware of any SIEM features.
