I open sourced a project of mine for doing TextToSpeech which can be found here (see the Releases link on the right). Simply highlight some text and press the hotkey and it will read it out. There is also a mode that works with images, drag a box around it and it will try to read any text it finds (though the results can be a little flakey) It has a few options for voice and I'd suggest the Legacy engine in the settings as the new Windows 10 engine is currently not as good. Unfortunately, when run, windows will display a warning as you have to buy a certificate for it to recognize it as "safe", but all the code is available to read and all processing is done locally. r/Dyslexia on Reddit: Text-to-Speech software?
January 6, 2022 -

I've never been to this sub before but have 2 teenagers with dyslexia. One needs a good text-to-speech software that has natural speech inflections. The monotone one she uses through Google (?) or her school learning platform (?) doesn't hold her attention and makes it harder to concentrate.

Do any of you have recommendations of products we could install on her computer? I honestly don't know how that works, or what we need so that much of her school (online) reading can be converted this way?

Her SpEd teacher suggested I look into software so I figured I'd come see what redditors w/ dyslexia already know about.

Hope you can help.

Lots of love and support to you all. I don't know, but I know.

February 2, 2025 -

My 15 year old is severely dyslexic, and also struggles with memory/info recall and reading comprehension. What text-to-speech software do you recommend?

I would like something that is free and can be used on a Chromebook for school. My son is looking for one that doesn't have (or has minimal) unusual pauses and sounds less robotic (this contributes to the reading comp issues).

He is homeschooled, so we do not have a district to provide this (in our state, homeschools and school districts do not work together), but he is taking dual credit classes at the community college this fall, so this would be very helpful for him.
