I've been trying to find a reliable adapter that'll let me transfer data from my PC to a USB-C device (for example a USB-C fash drive, or a phone/tablet via a USB-C to USB-C cable).
I haven't yet been able to find one made by a known brand. They all seen to be unbranded, with mixed reviews about how stable they are, and often seem to be USB 2.0 speed.
Are there any good ones out there? Have you tried one?

For a phone/tablet to PC why not just use a regular C to A cable? Also if you already have a USB C flash drive it's too late, but they make flash drives that have both USB A and USB C connectors on them, there's like a slider that you move and one or the other pops out from either end. Which is useful if you have some devices with only A ports and some with C ports.

Just bought a new iPhone and realized that the new USB-C cable wouldn't fit my car cigarette light power adapter or my older desktop PC. I stopped off at AutoZone and picked this up:

Didn't try it in car yet, but it did not work on my computer...then all of a sudden it did for a couple of minutes. Then it stopped and I can't get it to work again. I'm assuming either it's bad or shorted out or I did not get a reliable one.
Can anyone point me in the right diredctoin please?

Those adapters are potentially dangerous and forbidden by the USB C spec. It is possible to do them correctly, but I doubt the no-name thing you got at the auto shop is doing that. It's no surprise this spec violation is low quality. They're ripping you off with shoddy products. The simple answer here, as u/avidee said, is to use an A to C cable. Any such cable will do if all you care about is charging, and they're cheap -- you can get an Amazon Basics USB 2 cable for around the same price as that shoddy adapter on Amazon. Note that if you have a non-Pro iPhone 15, those don't support USB 3 and so any A to C cable will work at max speed there too. Regarding adapters -- the only good ones I know of are the ones from CableCreation. The thing to understand is that getting these adapters right requires active circuitry -- you need muxing to deal with reversible USB C cables and you need to not present 5 volts on V_bus unless the connected device presents itself as a sink. The time it makes sense to use these adapters is if you have a device with a captive USB C plug that you want to plug in to an A port. It doesn't make sense to get one just to adapt a simple passive cable. Regarding these specific adapters: my guess is that (on top of almost certainly having the V_bus hot short risk) they get the resistor signaling wrong and have exactly the old "56 KOhm" issue that many early defective A to C cables had 7 years ago. The net result is that he phone thinks it can draw 3 amps when the port on the computer is only expecting to provide 900 mA. That could cause damage to the port but will most likely just cause the port to shut off. One experiment to confirm this would be to try using the adapter with a fully 100% charged phone which will likely draw less power.

Don’t buy an adapter, just get a USB A to USB C cable. Good ones are inexpensive and you can leave it in your car.

Does anyone know any good USB-C female to USB-A male adapters? Not really sure what the USB IF stuff are, because if it does dictate quality control, it's either that or every manufacturer of those adapters and cables have quality control issues.

The Cable Creation ones are the usual recommendation here: https://www.amazon.com/Female-Adapter-3-Pack-CableCreation-Peripherals/dp/B074V4QRNK Note that most of the adapters you'll find are passive. A passive adapter is necessarily broken in two ways: it will only work for USB 3 in (at most) one orientation, and it will be V_bus hot which can present a shorting risk. (the cheap ones may be broken in more!) These ones are active and get both of those right. You're not going to find one of these USB-IF certified because the USB standard explicitly forbids them -- and while from context the ban only contemplates passive "adapter assemblies", at best there's no framework for certifying active adapters even if they get everything right.
