What are Categorical Data Encoding Methods | Binary Encoding
May 1, 2025 - If there are multiple categories in a feature variable in such a case we need a similar number of dummy variables to encode the data. For example, a column with 30 different values will require 30 new variables for coding.
categorical data - How does this binary encoder function work? - Stack Overflow
I'm trying to understand the logic behind this binary encoder. It automatically takes categorical variables and dummy codes them (similar to one-hot-encoding on sklearn), but reduces the number of More on stackoverflow.com
Downsides of target encoding compared to one hot encoding?
One issue is you're sort of using the data twice: first you use the target to make your new feature ordinal, then you use those same labels to train your learner at the following step. This can increase model variance. Second potential issue is if you're using a tree-based model you're limited to using your new ordinal feature only one time in the tree. If you one-hot encoded you could use one of the resulting features at the top of the tree, and another down the branch. Typically you would use target encoding for a high-cardinality feature if one-hot encoding would explode the feature space to the point that the model would be difficult to manage. If you can afford the added features I would stick to one-hot. Target encoding is a useful technique just be aware of the impact it may be having on the model you're training. More on reddit.com

Binary Encoding Technique
Libraries like category_encoders provide convenient implementations of Binary Encoding (BinaryEncoder) that integrate well with Pandas DataFrames and Scikit-learn pipelines. # Example using category_encoders # Assuming 'df' is your DataFrame and 'DeviceType' is the column # import category_encoders as ce # encoder = ce.BinaryEncoder(cols=['DeviceType']) # df_encoded = encoder.fit_transform(df) # print(df_encoded.head())

What Are the Best Categorical Data Encoding Methods?
September 6, 2021 - It should be applied with high dimension data in terms of categorical values. In the above example, we implemented a hashing encoder for 6 dummy variables instead of 8 dummy variables just by using n_encoding = 6. In the hash encoding, we have seen that using hashing can cause the loss of data and on the other hand we have seen in one hot encoding dimensionality of the data is increasing. The binary encoding is a process where we can perform hash encoding look like encoding without losing the information just like one hot encoding.

Handling Categorical Variables in scikit-learn: Strategies and Encoding Techniques – Data Science Horizons
For binary categorical variables where each observation belongs to one of two possible classes, simple binary encoding with 0s and 1s can be used. For example, consider a column “IsStudent” with possible values “Yes” and “No”. This could be binarily encoded as:

WoE is a measure of “goodness” or “strength” of a category at predicting the target outcome being ‘1’ or ‘positive’. It means that categories with high values of WoE are strong predictors of the positive class. WoE encoding can only be used with binary classification where the target variable has two possible outcomes such as ‘1’ and ‘0’. This characteristic of WoE encoding makes it highly compatible with logistic regression whose fundamentals are also based on the concept of log odds.
