White and amber headlights are legal — and required — in most states. But depending on where you live, it may be illegal to drive with certain colored lights attached to your car. Blue lights are often reserved for emergency vehicles like police cars, fire trucks, and ambulances, and some states also prohibit red lights unless they’re in the back of your vehicle.

There are currently no laws prohibiting the use of neon underglow lights, or lights underneath your car, but you may still be prohibited from using certain colored lights around your vehicle. For example, lights visible from the front of your car may need to be yellow or amber and lights shone from the back of your car may need to be red, depending on the state you live in.
