So my current car has bit the dust, and I'm in the market for a new car. The last car I had was paid off about 2 years ago, and I haven't had a car payment in that long and I'm not too keen on going back to one. That being said, I can afford about $2K to maybe $2500 towards a car out of pocket. I know I'm going to have to title it and get tags and all (I live in Maryland), but I can work that out.
I would like to get an older BMW or Mercedes because I know they generally last forever, but I'm having a hard time convincing the wife of that. She wants to me to get something closer to 2000 that has close to 100K miles on it, something like a Honda or Nissan. The most I'm going to be doing is driving the 50-60 round trip miles back and forth to work daily, and maybe drive it here and there around town if I need to go out.
Here are some of the BMW's I found in my price range in the last week or so on Craigslist. Can anyone tell me how good cars from these years are and what I should be looking for in this timeframe as far as a 3 series or 5 series goes?

I have owned a 1990 Volkswagen Jetta that runs beautifully when its running, but lately it has been giving me problems and I'm looking into getting a new (used) car. I was thinking of perhaps a 1996-1999 BMW 325 or 318. The one in particular I'm looking at is a 1996 318is, 4-cyl with only ~80,000 miles on it. The owner seems legit (has all maintenance/records). Is this the kind of car that will be pretty dependable? Obviously some of this depends on how often I care for it. Thanks to anyone who isn't a smartass :)
