DIY Board and Batten Siding
January 30, 2023 - We used large ACX Plywood sheets instead of what was previously applied to the exterior of the structure, which was traditional 1×10 wood boards, which is of course where the name “board and batten” comes from. Here’s why we used ACX Plywood instead of traditional board: this type of plywood is made of high-grade ‘A-type’ plywood on one side and a lower-grade ‘C-type’ on the other, and the two sides are attached by using a weather-resistant glue.

I used to take Ken Kern's advice ... a lot of energy to the system - the tendency is for the boards to cup - I put the heart side of the boards out as a good start - the battens have to control the cupping - make sure your nailers are robust, use galvanized spiral nails, ... On the barn project I bought 1x12 rough sawn pine which will be installed as board and batten. The building is post frame but still has OSB on the outside. February 18, 2009 - start by standing a board either side of each window and door, then fill in the space between, adjusting the width of boards/space between boards so to come out 'even' - the batten can then trim the space between the siding and the door/window frames -

January 30, 2022 - Plywood alone would likely cost more than that, plus your battens, plus your z-flashing, caulk, your paint, plus the annual maintenance. I don't think it's a good plan. ... Hi there @XSleeper and thanks for taking the time to help. Thanks for the various types of ply, it's helped a bunch with my Googling. It will take me a bit but I'm going to come up with a price diff per SF between ext. grade plys, board lumber and masonry boards and see what I would even be saving in cost of application.

July 27, 2022 - A pressure treated (for ground contact!) skirt board and flashing would be my choice. Click to expand... Agree with this. ... If you did do horizontal rainscreen battens, could just use a wide one - PVC or pressure treated - at bottom. I might consider no rain screen and install a 12" or wider strip of coil stock between OSB and boards, to get them as far as possible above ground and avoid the Z flashing.

September 3, 2024 -

I had some board and batten siding installed on a project and I want to make sure I am getting what I paid for, as I went for a well known high priced siding company. The job looks a little shoddy to me but I don’t know the tolerances generally allowable on this job.

There’s at least 3/4” gaps in the trim over the drip cap on the window. The housewrap is showing through. What are the recommended installation gaps to leave in this area? This is my main issue.

There’s a half inch uneven reveal above the windows where they have the upper piece of hardie above the windows

Hardie reveal over door is not level or even. Gap is about 1/8” over middle and increases to 1/4” or more on right.

Metal filings not cleaned up - although not a big issue.

Large gap over the outlet cover. It’s around 3/8” or so.

Thanks for your knowledge.

September 1, 2021 - What’s your trade and level of expertise? Board and batten is traditionally nailed to girts or horizontal furring strips Relying on OSB to hold it is not acceptable. Don’t think any one could afford to accept my bid for screwing siding on with 3” screws.
