Log profile - Wikipedia
January 7, 2026 - In early times of digital cinematography, professional video cameras were only capable to capture linear sensor image up to 10-bit color depth even in HDCAM-SR format, but resulted in "video-look" compared with film stock cinematography even in the same 24 frames per second and shutter speeds. The log gamma profile began gaining industrial popularity since 2005, when Arri released Arriflex D-20 which provided original Log-C gamma through HD-SDI video output, and further in 2008, when Sony released CineAlta F35 camera (and its 2005 Panavision Genesis sibling) with S-Log video recording on HDCAM-SR tape.

Is the EOSHD C-LOG Picture Profile worth it?
I haven't shot on Canon DSLRs in a very long time, but this reminds me a lot of the cinestyle fad back in 2011. My results using a neutral CP with -2 saturation, -2 contrast, and -2 sharpness were almost always better than grading cinestyle on Canon DSLRs. Cinestyle just pretended to give additional flexibility in post by mimicking the look of logarithmic image recording. I'd be wary of any CP for Canon DSLRs, especially one that costs. Faking C Log: Worth it?
You can load Technicolor's Cinestyle profile . I've put it on my 7Dmkii and I've found the footage quite good. Not quite as good as a Log profile but very usable. When I shoot video for work I use a Panasonic GH4 with VLog. I've found flat profiles very helpful for getting the detail and professional look I want. More on reddit.com

What is the difference between Canon Log, Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3?

The original Canon Log delivers a dynamic range of approximately 12 stops, Canon Log 2 up to 16 stops, and Canon Log 3 up to 14 stops. Canon Log 2 retains more detail in darker areas than Canon Log 3 but also features an elevated noise floor. Canon Log 3 is easier to grade thanks to producing a cleaner image and retains the same amount of highlight information as Canon Log 2.

How does Canon Log help with colour grading in post-production?

Canon Log helps with colour grading as it is recorded at 10-bit colour depth and provides a flat image with low saturation that is an excellent foundation for colour adjustments and HDR workflows. It is easier to match footage shot on different cameras that have been set to Canon Log, enabling clips from Cinema EOS and EOS mirrorless cameras to be combined and colour matched to give a consistent look on a multi-cam shoot.

Comparing C Log Profiles on the C300 Mark II
December 18, 2017 - The C300 Mark II, the C700, and the C200 all record at much higher bit rates than the C100, 5D MKIV, or C300, and thus can be pushed around a lot more in post-production. C Log 2 takes all of this new-found potential and hands it straight to the end user. Canon has created a very hands-off profile that is super flat and gives the colorist or editor a huge amount of post-production flexibility.

r/Filmmakers on Reddit: Is the EOSHD C-LOG Picture Profile worth it?
November 10, 2017 -

I am thinking of getting a flat picture profile for grading on my Canon EOS 80d and found this (https://www.eoshd.com/2016/09/now-available-eoshd-picture-profiles-brings-c-log-canon-dslrs-including-1d-x-mark-ii-5d-mark-iv/) alternative for Canon log. I noticed you load a custom picture profile on to your camera which changes contrast and colour to emulate real C-LOG. Is there any difference to just manually making a custom profile with the same values or is there more to it? I also looked at the Technicolor Cinestyle but apparently it is very outdated and doesn't work as well.

Live View: Enable for a Rec.709 preview, but remember, this can be inaccurate when exposing to the right. So I don’t use it, and instead use other exposure tools to help me. Picture Profile: I add sharpness (+3) in-camera to save editing time.

This is what ChatGPT says: The Canon EOS Rebel T5i (also known as the EOS 700D) does not come equipped with a native Canon Log (C-Log) profile. However, there are several methods to achieve a flat picture profile that approximates a log profile, enhancing your footage's flexibility during post-production. 📷 Options for Achieving a Log-Like Profile on the Canon T5i EOSHD C-LOG Profile The EOSHD C-LOG is a custom picture style developed to emulate Canon's official C-Log. It can be installed on Canon DSLRs, including the T5i, without the need for firmware modifications. This profile offers a flatter image, capturing more dynamic range and providing greater latitude for color grading in post-production. Installation is straightforward using Canon's EOS Utility software. 2. Technicolor Cinestyle Technicolor's Cinestyle is a free picture style designed to produce a flat image profile. While it doesn't offer the same dynamic range as true log profiles, it still provides enhanced flexibility for color grading compared to the standard profiles. It's a popular choice among Canon DSLR users seeking a simple solution without additional costs. 3. Custom Neutral Profile Adjustments You can manually adjust the in-camera settings to create a flatter image profile: Picture Style: Set to 'Neutral' Sharpness: 0 Contrast: -4 Saturation: -2 Color Tone: 0 This method doesn't require any additional downloads or installations and can be a quick way to achieve a flatter image directly in-camera. 4. Magic Lantern Firmware Magic Lantern is a third-party firmware add-on that unlocks advanced features on Canon DSLRs, including the T5i. With Magic Lantern, you can access functionalities like RAW video recording, which offers maximum flexibility in post-production. However, installing Magic Lantern carries risks, including potential camera malfunction, and should be approached with caution. ✅ Recommendation For most users seeking a balance between ease of use and improved post-production flexibility, the EOSHD C-LOG profile is a strong choice. It provides a flatter image suitable for color grading without the complexities of firmware modifications. If you're looking for a free alternative, Technicolor Cinestyle is a viable option. For those comfortable with manual adjustments, customizing the 'Neutral' profile can also yield satisfactory results. If you're interested in a step-by-step guide on installing the EOSHD C-LOG profile or adjusting your camera settings, feel free to ask!

Understanding Log-Format Recording | B&H eXplora
May 7, 2019 - Once touted as a headlining feature on only the highest grade digital video/cinema cameras, such as the Sony CineAlta line, log (logarithmic) recording has become a mainstay on more affordable professional products, such as the Canon EOS-C series, and more accessible through prosumer products like the Sony α-series mirrorless cameras. One of the reasons log recording has become so prevalent is that it is often associated with the idea of better image quality. In a nutshell, recording using a log picture profile or curve preserves more of your image’s dynamic range and tonality by redistributing the digital exposure value representations over the entire value set using a preset logarithmic function.

July 5, 2025 - If you’ve already delved into the world of basic color correction and started experimenting with LUTs, you might have come across the term “LOG” or logarithmic profiles like S-Log (Sony), C-Log (Canon), V-Log (Panasonic), F-Log (Fujifilm), etc. You’ll notice that footage shot in LOG looks incredibly flat, desaturated, and low-contrast straight out of camera.
