I can't tell if I'm overthinking this or out of my mind. I scored a free patio set including this square table with a propane fire pit in the middle. The plaster or whatever it's made from is partially broken so I want to replace the entire piece as opposed to trying to jigsaw it back in to place.
My plan is to find the right sheet at Home Depot and get a cut of the exterior, then take it home and cut the interior square for the fire pit. Then use maybe some flame retardant stain or something similar. Is this a safety issue at all? I tested the fire for a short period and didn't see anything that dissuaded me.
If wood is ok to use, any recommendations on the type and/or stain? If not, any recommendations for a cheap alternative? Thanks!
We have an upstairs wooden deck and we have a pretty open space there. We are thinking of putting our fire pit bowl there, but am concerned a bit about safety.
I see these fire pit mats online and I’m wondering if that’s enough to create a safe environment for the fire pit.
Currently we have the fire pit on concrete and it doesn’t seem that hot at all, but I just want to be extra cautious. Honestly it doesn’t even feel like I need the mat? But would love everyone’s thoughts!
We just have an outdoor rug on our deck currently.

Hey all,
I have an existing fire pit that I’d like to use in a more functional way. My idea is to either: 1. Build a table that surrounds the fire pit, or 2. Place the fire pit inside a table.
My question is — can I just buy a wood coffee table and cut a hole for the fire pit, or is that a fire hazard? If that’s not safe, are there specific table kits or materials I should be looking at that are made to surround a fire pit?
I’d love to hear from anyone who has done a DIY build like this or knows of products that are already designed for this. I want the look of a coffee table but don’t want to create a fire risk.
Thanks!
We have been contemplating renovating our backyard for some time. We hemmed an hawed through the summer with no progress. Now that it is getting cooler I’m really wishing that we had installed the fire pit I really wanted. An easier alternative is to just get a fire table / seating combo, but my husband says it will not give off enough warmth. For reference the one I am looking at says it will give off 55,000 BTU, and I live in So Cal where it will likely be used in high 50’s to mid 60’s weather. Is it worth it to buy a fire table or stick with the patio heaters?
