r/Target on Reddit: Is this position for 16 year olds?
January 25, 2022 -

I have a few weeks of prior work experience working in a garden center (my job is NOT giving me any hours and seem very disorganized) and I’d like to know if I could apply for this job at 16 and get in. I have lots of knowledge of all of these things, so I’m not QUITE sure which one to apply for specifically (I’m pretty good with computers and electronics, know a lot, and want to work in cs when I’m older, but I’m also obsessed with makeup and clothes, and I buy lots of that stuff, so beauty and style might come naturally too). I don’t know if they’re separate in terms of like what age you have to be, or what my best bet is when it comes to age. I keep searching up what the minimum age is, and I get very mixed results for all of them. If someone could have a concrete answer, that would be great. I don’t imagine it’s SUPER hard, it just seems like a glorified sales associate, so I do imagine it’s 16. Still, I need an answer, because I’ve seen some people say 18.

Because you're still a minor your options are limited to pretty much cashier, cart attendant and maybe sales floor. The interview questions are really super simple, they're just going to ask you about a time when... you made a mistake, gave great customer service, worked with a team, worked with a difficult coworker, ect. The questions on glass door are pretty accurate, I would look there too. You're rated on the S.A.R method - so you'll respond with what the (S) situation was, what (A) action you took and what was the (R) result. They're really looking for you to answer in that specific manner.

So when I was 17 I applied for a Cashier job at Target. I wore a button down t-shirt with the sleeves rolled up and black jeans. All the questions were situational, and i've made a few short films during my sophomore and junior years of high school so I used a lot of my experience doing that to answer the questions. I think the whole, "Being the director and keeping everyone happy and motivated" was the big selling point since Target really likes having people who can be strong leaders. Anyways after my first interview they wanted to move immediately into the second one but nobody was available to do it, and when they called me 3 hours later I answered and said I could be there as soon as possible (that probably helped as well). After the second interview, they asked me if I wanted to do Electronics instead of being a cashier (uh...duh). 3 guys who worked in Electronics all quit about a month or two before I had my interview so that might have been part of the reason they moved me, that and all the stuff about the film experience and leadership skills. Now as a minor I could only work 3 hours and 45 minutes on weekdays and I couldn't work past 9:15pm and we have people that call out constantly so they always hate that I can't work later. So yeah, my biggest word of advice is to be confident and act like a leader would.
