Canon 90D hands-on review: DSLRs aren’t dead yet - Videomaker
June 9, 2020 - This is a problem; many other cameras in this price range offer some kind of “log” simulation or actual log gamma curve. The fact that Canon doesn’t include this in their mid to lower-end cameras is unacceptable. This normally the section where we talk about all the great tools the camera comes with to help you nail your shot. However, since the Canon 90D only has focus peaking and a rule of thirds grid, this section is a bit short.

r/videography on Reddit: I shoot with a Canon 80D, should I download C-log as the flat neutral color profile isn't giving me enough information for grading?
January 26, 2023 -

I've edited RAW photos but technical video / cinematic is new ground to me. I'm learning. Do I need to download and install C log or something else? (Using Final Cut Pro X)

I tried color correcting / grading a test shot from today and can't get much clarity from it while I did shoot at a nice balanced level using natural light outside. I am using the NEUTRAL color profile at 24fps, shutter at 50 with a 50mm 1.4 lense.

The shot has some cool moments but I couldn't get what I wanted out of it as far as the overall clarity and feel. Ya know those color grading YouTube vids with the quick reveal before and after where the before always has that grayish overlay tint and then it looks beautiful? What's all the before stuff?

For reference I am a recording engineer. I understand getting a good take in the studio by way of a good performance with a well balanced and premeditated idea for a sound. You can't polish a turd. I like an intense cinematic look so I'm trying to do all the BEFORE work right before I put my SD card into my computer to load my footage.

Thanks this sub is awesome.

That camera doesn't have log. You see people marketing fake log for it. https://www.eoshd.com/news/eoshd-c-log-and-film-simulation-picture-profiles-for-canon/ While it is certainly flatter than defaults, it's still rec709. They also do a really shitty thing and call it c-log (custom log) to confuse people thinking it is clog (canon log). The conversion tools for real clog are going to destroy your footage if you use them on the fake log

Can you post some footage (or at least screenshots) so we can see what you're working with? It's just about impossible to offer good advice without understanding what footage you're working with, but here are my initial thoughts. Keep in mind that you're shooting video with a stills camera. The camera has certain limitations (most notably bit rate and bit depth) that will make color grading somewhat more difficult regardless of the color profile you shoot in. I spent years shooting on a Canon 7D, and the footage was always fairly difficult to work with. Installing Magic Lantern and increasing the bit rate did help, especially when using CineStyle too. I'm not very familiar with Final Cut X (I edit in Resolve on PCs) but generally speaking, you'll want to focus on correction first followed by grading. For correction, the goal is to perfect exposure, color, etc so that it looks like it did on set. The grading phase is where you get artistic and stylize it. Here's the basic process I go through for most drone or stills camera footage. I start by getting my exposure, black point (the darkest color in the shot) and white point (the brightest color) all roughly where they need to be. Levels or curves work well for this. After that, I'll correct white balance and tint, then use 3-way color wheels to get everything looking natural. For grading, I'll make a separate set of nodes (not sure if Final Cut has a similar function, but basically another copy of all the color correction tools) and do the creative stuff, playing with the colors to give it the final style. This will vary depending on your preference, or you might choose to use a LUT at this point.

r/davinciresolve on Reddit: Color Space Transform - which color input space for canon 90D ?
February 8, 2022 -

hi all, been looking at newer ways to color grade, and notice the color space transform, but can't find a mode that works with my footage from the 90D.

The technicolor 'cinestyle' profile flattens the image alot, and looking to see if color space transform can be used for my situation to apply a 'baseline' grade.

thanks for any help.

Davinci has 3 gamma options from Canon in the Color Space Transform tool - you could try each one and see how it looks. At the end of the day while it is nice to have a definitive transform to REC 709 (or whatever space you are working in) - at the end of the day there is no hard and fast rule, and every camera company has a different colour space and gamma setup. An alternative way to get a flat starting point (without CST), referring to the waveform (or parade) scopes in the color panel, try using the gain and lift to bring the brights up nearly to the top, and the lows down nearly to the bottom of the scope. And you can push the gamma to set an even mid point. Don't be afraid to add saturation, sometimes in multiple nodes - and use your vectorscope to make sure you're not pushing too much color into the image. Then from what should be even contrast, dark darks and bright brights - you can get to work on developing your colours. Just don't clip anything top or bottom if that makes sense. Hope that helps a bit!
