How Does the Sony A7 V Stack Up to the R6 Mark III - Canon Rumors
December 4, 2025 - Newcomers would start with R100 and 18-45 probably, or the Sony/Nikon equivalent, and build from that; certainly neither with R6III or A7V which are professional cameras costing two months of salary for the body only, and almost another month of salary for each of the two zoom lenses you suggested to start with. They are a month of UK take-home average salary. And pros will get them cheaper because of tax relief. ... As someone who is new to Canon (for bird photography), but has spent time using Sony I have to say that IMO they take an extremely cynical approach to their consumer cameras.

r/Cameras on Reddit: Deciding Sony A7V or Canon R6 III
January 4, 2026 -

Budget: 3k but irrelevant - deciding between 2 bodies Country: EU Condition: New only Type of Camera: mirrorless Intended use: hybrid shooting If photography; what style: travel so mix of landscape, street, portrait If video what style: travel What features do you absolutely need: generally leaning towards more video needs than photography at the moment What features would be nice to have: Portability: Irrelevant Cameras you're considering: Sony Alpha7V and Canon R6 III Cameras you already have: Old DSLR and action cameras, I do use slow motion so 60fps is absolutely needed and 120fps is used sometimes

Hello everyone, I'm traveling a lot and like to get more into travel video making and photography. I mostly just use a GoPro now but there are many limitations obviously. I'd choose a more video camera but photography is something I've enjoyed in the past too so these 2 hybrids came out as the best options. I am also planning (eventually) to get into underwater video making when scuba so low light is quite important but not absolute priority.

I'm considering Sony A7V and Canon R6 III, I do not have any usable lenses so system change is not a consideration. I've watched all comparison videos but it's difficult to tell sponsored videos from real reviews. What I consider Sony pros:

  • stacked sensor - no blackouts and better EVF

  • less overheating

  • lens availability

Sony cons for me:

  • only 4k - not much crop in post

  • 120fps crop

  • no open gate (not truly sure how useful it might be)

What I consider Canon pros:

  • open gate - I do shoot for both YT and IG but it's probably not making that big a difference

  • high res - I really enjoy this on my GoPro to have ability to crop and still have 4k video

Canon cons for me:

  • less good EVF and blackouts when shooting

  • unstacked sensor but possibly that's not going to be very different from A7V

  • overheating maybe

  • IBIS seems wobbly in some reviews

  • only Canon lenses (not very sure how much of an impact this might have in the future for me)

The high res on Canon and Sony's crop on 120fps are leaning me towards Canon but the lens availability and choosing a system makes me want to choose Sony.

Can anyone please give me their point of view based on my needs? I don't know how much e.g. lens availability is more important compared to high res video availability.

Thank you

You basically hit the tradeoffs of both systems right now. Sony is steering you towards their cinema line if you want more video capabilities. Personally I switched from Canon EF -> RF (for a short bit) to Sony. Sony has nailed the compact camera body and some of their first party new lenses are amazing in quality and size, which mattered for me traveling. I don’t think you would regret either, at least not without trying both for awhile.

IMO, the A7V is slightly better for working professionals even though its video is inferior to the R6iii on paper. R6iii might better benefit someone using the camera more as a hobby. A7V has 1-2 more stops of dynamic range and a faster sensor than the R6iii along with more advanced AF performance. It also won't overheat even with the most demanding settings. Sony's lenses are noticeably smaller and lighter than the Canon equivalent which may not matter for photography, but, can be very beneficial for video when working with gimbals...I once worked with an R6ii using a 28-70 f/2.0 and hated every second of it. I said the A7V may be better for working professionals because its 4K video is great for what it is even if it is not industry leading. The problem I see with cameras like the R6iii in regards to video is that almost all of the most talked about features consume MASSIVE amounts of data. If you're filming multiple times a week, you are going to be going through 20TB hard drives every month. No client is asking for deliverables above 4K and so IMO, usability of the camera is more important than numbers.
