From the Article:
“Aiming to monetize what’s become a viral phenomenon, OpenAI today launched a new pilot subscription plan for ChatGPT, its text-generating AI that can write convincingly human-like essays, poems, emails, lyrics and more. Called ChatGPT Plus and starting at $20 per month, the service delivers a number of benefits over the base-level ChatGPT, OpenAI says, including general access to ChatGPT even during peak times, faster response times and priority access to new features and improvements.
The free ChatGPT tier is here to stay — it’s not going away. As for ChatGPT Plus, it’s only available to customers in the U.S. at the moment. OpenAI says it’ll begin the process of inviting people from its waitlist in the coming months and look to expand Plus to additional countries and regions “soon.”

I’ve been wildly happy to pay $20/month ever since the ChatGPT Plus plan was revealed.
Having access to GPT4 was a game-changer for helping me write papers in my master’s. It was so clear at the time how it was miles above 3.5 in so many ways.
But now everyone has access to GPT4o…
And we don’t even have access to voice yet…
I’m starting to feel like the subscription isn’t really worth it anymore.
They’re at a weird inflection point where it’s super exciting to release GPT4o capabilities to everyone for free (which I also think is a great step forward), but didn’t immediately have anything to take it’s place at the plus level (besides 5x usage limits).
Even when voice mode is finally out, I just don’t know how much longer I can continue paying $20/month for this.
It’s one of the most expensive subscriptions I have.
I’m holding out for voice mode - but this intermediary time is somewhat painful.
