r/AskNYC on Reddit: Good Inexpensive thrift stores in nyc?
February 27, 2022 -
I’ve been to a few thrift stores and I’m noticing that some of them are a bit pricey 😅
For example, The places I’ve checked out seem to price shirts (plain random shirts, not designer or anything) at like tjmaxx comparable prices..
I’ve been to a few Goodwills that were DECENT, but the one in Brooklyn is getting crazy with their prices (they’ve made the store to appeal more to those who just thrift for trends, but what about people who actually can’t afford other many options than thrifting??), and I tried Buffalo Exchanges but they’re not really worth it in my opinion
What are some good thrift stores that have actually good prices?

I'm fond of Le Point Value on the corner of Flushing + knickerbocker. disorganized as hell but I've found some of my fave wardrobe staples there over the years. Around the corner is L Train, there's a huge huge huge one and then a smaller one with mostly designer/trendy vintage/Adidas tracksuits (?) The small one is overpriced as hell, but the big one is great if you're looking for something specific, like a sweater, or jeans, or a German military jacket, or an 80's beaded and sequin shirt with shoulder pads (why are there so many of these?). It's super organized. as a bonus, there's a greek place down the street from both of these called Yia Yia's which is LEGIT.

Rent is high. There is no room for suburb type cheap thrift stores in most neighborhoods 3 options you still have Goodwill has 1 color 40% off every week, nothing designer survives but there’s always tons of things left non designer Same Goodwill color, Tuesdays specifically are called $2 Tuesday. It used to be all items in that color are $2, then they changed it to 4-5 changing categories. Like all sweaters, t shirts and skirts from the oldest color are $2. $2 Tuesday should be running in all NY/NJ goodwills Goodwill has a few outlets in the city, it’s what happens to that color tag once the discount week is over. It’s sold by weight and super super super cheap No amazing “500 jacket for $20” deals but lots of wearable clothes

Broke and the City: Actually Affordable NYC Thrift Stores - Fashionista
January 11, 2016 - Buffalo Exchange is a chain thrift store where hipsters can sell clothes for money or store credit to buy other hipster cast-offs. I’ve been to both NYC locations and one in San Diego, and all I can say is the goods seriously depend on the neighborhood. The Williamsburg location is trendier and overall has better clothes, but it’s a bit more expensive, they don’t buy back as much of your stuff and the staff isn’t very nice.

What is your favorite thrift store in NYC?
a lot of these answers (awoke, stella dallas, tokio 7) are vintage and secondhand but NOT thrift! (thrift is cheap, proceeds usually go to charity, etc.) you may want to specify if you’re interested in all secondhand shops or just thrifting, just FYI in case you’re on a budget my recs for thrifting: housing works, especially the soho and chelsea locations, and cure thrift. a little more curated but still close to thrifting prices would be L train vintage and urban jungle! Thrifting in NYC?
You just have to hit as many as you can to find your spots. There are tons of spots in Brooklyn and Queens. I'd start going down the list. YMMV on what appeals to you. Are you looking for designers? Vintage? Cheap deals? Some places have less man presenting options so that would be a factor. What is overpriced to you? If you are talking cheap cheap, you might want to be going to the bins. What did you not like about L Train? I think L Train is a good spot. They have a lot of locations so worth checking out different ones. Their Urban Jungle location usually hits: https://www.ltrainvintagenyc.com/new-page-3 There are many stores in Manhattan with a lot of variety. Not all of them are overpriced or "bad." I like the Goodwills in Manhattan. I find them to be well priced, especially with half price tags, and a lot of good finds. And they have a rewards program. But I usually find with some digging and patience, most stores will have some good stuff, as if the nature of thrifting. Depending on what you are looking for, I would add Domsey Express to the list. Le Point as well. Other People's Clothes too. Also, the GANAS thrift store on SI, Everything Goes https://www.etgstores.com/ If you can get out of town, there are some great spots all around us too. I agree with Bettina. Unfortunately, used - sorry, "vinatge", "retro" or "pre-owned" clothing and hosuewares are so trendy here that it is harder to find true bargains. Thrift stores ain't so thrifty in this town! On the plus side, the quality here is very good, esp at Housing Works.
