Nope, it does not include it, you'd still have to pay for the Claude Code API/tokens over and above the monthly pro sub. Answer from reditdiditdoneit on reddit.com

r/ClaudeAI on Reddit: Claude Code not included in the Pro Plan?
July 16, 2025 -

I bought the Pro plan last week as on the marketing website pricing page as of August 15th 2025 it states "Claude Code is included in your Pro plan. Perfect for short coding sprints in smaller codebases with Claude Sonnet 4.".

However when I tried to use it with Claude Code, I got the error: "Credit balance too low · Add funds".

I contacted Anthropic support and the chat bot responded:

You're seeing this discrepancy because there's been a recent update to Claude Code access. The page you're referencing appears to be outdated information.Currently, Claude Code is only included with Max plan subscriptions, not Pro plans. Your Pro plan subscription only gives you access to Claude through the web, desktop, and mobile apps. To use Claude Code, you have two options:

Upgrade to a Max plan - This will give you access to Claude Code with your subscription, so you won't need separate API credits. Max plans offer two usage tiers: 5x Pro usage ($100/month) or 20x Pro usage ($200/month).

Use pay-as-you-go API credits - You can purchase API credits through the Anthropic Console to use Claude Code on a pay-per-use basis while keeping your Pro plan.

And then kindly refunded me 😅

I know most people on here are using the Max 5x plan, but if I want to evaluate Claude Code (I'm currently using Gemini), do I need to drop a whole $100? Or is Anthropic Support just tripping balls?

Would it not be cheaper to buy the $20/month Cursor plan and use Claude via Cursor CLI?

I know, I probably shouldn't say anything because this is absolutely subsidized launch pricing to drive up interest and I'm going to jinx it and they'll eventually slow down the gravy train but damn. I saw someone else post their $20 in 2 days breaking even and thought I might as well share my own experience - I broke even day 1. I've actually only gotten rate limited once, and it was for about an hour and a half on that first day when I burned $30 in equivalent API use.

I'm a heavy roo code user via API and get everything for free at work so I generally look for the right tool for the job more than anything else, and while I still think roo modes shine where claude code hasn't quite nailed yet, it's a very solid product. In my own time, I had been going more gemini heavy in roo because sonnet struggles with big context and have mad love for that beautiful month of free 2.5 pro exp... and I was willing to overlook a lot of the 05-06 flaws. Jury is still out on 06-05, but I decided to give the $20 plan a shot and see if claude code would cut my API bills and damn. It did almost immediately. First day was 06/06, the 06/01 and 06/05 were using my direct anthropic API. This is not an ad, it's good shit and you might as well get some VC funded discount claude code usage while it's still out there.

I've used claude code with api keys in the past, my account has zero credits.

Today I was going to try the claude code with pro subscription, but it just does not work. Im using the latest version of the CLI tool and it still says balance too low. even after logout, login, at login now it says "Add $5 to procced" which makes no sense.

So, how to use it?

This is what claude said:"With the Claude Pro plan, you're using the web interface, but Claude Code is a separate command-line tool that requires API access. Unfortunately, your Pro plan subscription doesn't automatically give you access to Claude Code without an API key.

Here are your options:

Option 1: Get API Access

Even with a Pro plan, you'll need separate API credits to use Claude Code. You can:

  • Sign up for API access at https://console.anthropic.com

  • API usage is billed separately from your Pro subscription"

Option 2: Use Claude Web Interface

Since you have Pro, you can:

  • Use the web interface at claude.ai for coding help

  • Copy/paste code between VS Code and the Claude web chat

  • Use Claude's artifact feature for code generation and editing

Option 3: VS Code Extensions

While not Claude specifically, you might find these helpful:

  • GitHub Copilot (if you have access)

  • Other AI coding assistants that integrate directly with VS Code

Unfortunately, there isn't currently a way to use Claude Code with just a Pro subscription - it requires API access with separate billing. The Pro plan gives you enhanced access to the web interface, but the command-line tool is a different product that needs API credentials.

I thought you got claude code with pro but the same rate limits as the web interface. Bummer.

EDIT: Yes , you CAN use claude code with VS code if you are on a pro subscription WITHOUT using API credits. (just install claude through npm in the integrated terminal and type claude - it will present an option to login with your pro account)

Latest CLaude Code is allowed officially to be used with Claude MAX, no more burning API tokens.

0.2.96

  • Claude Code can now also be used with a Claude Max subscription (https://claude.ai/upgrade)

https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/blob/main/CHANGELOG.md

Seem Anthropic want to push Claude Code as alternative to other tools like Cursor and push their Max subscription. May be one day a merge into Claude Desktop.

Is the $20 Claude Code plan enough for you? : r/ClaudeAI
May 19, 2025 - Sorry, this post has been removed by the moderators of r/ClaudeAI. Share ... Under the previous pricing rules before cursor, would you exceed 500 requests? If so, then it definitely wouldn’t be enough. Let me share my past usage experience. I used the Pro subscription in a Unity C# project with about 65,000 lines of effective code and 400 cs files.

r/ClaudeAI on Reddit: has anyone actually tried claude code on the $20 subscription? help me figure out if i need max or not.
June 30, 2025 -

i’m CONSIDERING upgrading to the $100-200 max subscription just because of how costly using claude is on cursor (and far worse through that damned api — still can’t believe designing a new glassmorphic card costed $4[?!?!] for one prompt).

i kind of want to test around with claude code more; i’ve used it in the past (wasn’t extremely impressed but keep in mind i’m building more simple webapps and whatnot). when i am doing something more novel, generally a massive amount of context or manual programming is still required, even if it’s integrating an API that the AI is not familiar with.

don’t send a firebomb through my window, but i kind of like gemini and the huge context window for their cli/vscode extension is awesome. i haven’t hit any usage caps, afaik it’s free but i also pay for gemini and it’s super cheap.

i do this partially for a living, so i don’t mind paying for a good tool, but i don’t want to throw $200 at something if my cursor, windsurf and gemini subscription will work fine. i am doing this 8-12+ hours a day generally speaking, so if it’s that large of a step up, i’m game.

main question: has anyone actually tried using the normal $20 subscription for claude code? will i get anything out of it other than seeing if paying for claude is right for me?

i despise burning money and buying stuff i won’t use, and i am not super apt on feeding in to anthropic’s greed…

please, if you’ve tried the different pricing tiers, give me an example of how much you can use of both sonnet and opus on each

What are claude code usage limits like with pro subscription?
April 28, 2025 - Yo bro, the $20 pro subscription for Claude Code definitely has tighter limits compared to max — especially with complex tasks involving tons of sub-agents and tool calls.
