What are the hardiest tropicals I can grow outdoors in Zone 5 with or without some protection?

Depends on what you consider a "tropical" but none as far as I know. At best you'd need either to dig them out or otherwise move them to basement/garage/something for the winter.

Tropical (or tropical-looking) plants that can survive a snowy winter?
Tropical looking isn't easy to quantify... There are hardy hibiscus that have a similar look to the tropical ones that can be planted in the ground outside in my WI zone (5a). To have true tropicals you may have to move things in for the winter, into a sunny spot, or choose things that can go dormant in an out of the way place (like your basement). More on reddit.com

Foolproof Winter-Hardy Tropical and Temperate Plants | HGTV
July 6, 2018 - The handsome gray-green foliage provides a wonderful tropical feel and vertical accent to the garden. The effect is heightened in fall when flower panicles are produced in large numbers and tower to as much as 15 feet. The plumes begin as soft pink, open to silver and look great through the winter. Hardy sugar cane performs well down to zone 6. ... Soft shield fern (Polystichum setiferum) has feathery, dark green, narrow fronds that are evergreen and the perfect contrast to bold-leaved plants.

Tropical Plants for a Cold Climate Garden - Here She Grows
November 5, 2024 - While not rocking huge leaves like other tropical plants mentioned in this post, coleus is a rockstar in the color realm. There are so many colors and I struggle with which to plant every year. Here I have Vino planted beneath a hydrangea tree. Both require a good amount of water in this southern exposure and regular pinching of the new growth on the coleus results in a beautifully rounded, dense plant. It’s hard to believe that they started as just four little plants in a cell pack.

r/gardening on Reddit: Tropical (or tropical-looking) plants that can survive a snowy winter?
November 27, 2019 -

Hey all! i just moved from Florida to Michigan and i'm missing all my beautiful plants. I can't seem to find any plants at stores that can survive below 60-50°f...but it's still not regularly out of the 40s yet. I'm looking for plants that can thrive in the summer and at least grow back the next spring. I don't need them to bloom all year long, I just want to be sure they won't completely die when it gets cold out. any suggestions help, i'm looking to start planting in a month or two (: 🌱
