The smart shoppers that I have seen usually have the ability to memorize prices on grocery items they frequently buy. When they see a deal, they know that and buy huge quantity of that. Answer from Interstate75 on reddit.com

I have been searching grocery and personal care prices item by item to compare Kroger to Meijer (this are my only real options). Has anyone found a quicker way they would be willing to share? I could go to Aldi as well. I have looked at some apps to download but most seem pretty sketchy about info gathering or what they actually do. Having to keep typing to meet the 300 character limit so please pardon the run on sentence.

I used to manually keep track of where I can find the best price per unit for an item on an Excel sheet, but I wanted to know if there's an app/program that automatically tracks which grocery store has the best price for an item if I scan my receipt? Or something along those lines. It's been tedious for me to compare prices and update my own guide, so I haven't been keeping up with it. I've been considering switching from primarily shopping from Sprouts to Trader Joe's, but I believe the decision would be easier to make if I had a sort of price comparison app.

Much love to this subreddit! The tips I've read under other posts have been tremendously helpful, and I'm thankful anyone that write tips for this post too.

Is there anywhere I can look to compare prices for groceries? Or am I stuck driving and circling around to all the stores near me to find the best prices?

Frankly, I don’t even know how grocery store pricing works.

Do prices fluctuate week to week? Month or month? Day to day?

I have 5 different grocery stores in my area. There are a couple I never go to because of distance, but I definitely would if I knew they had some cheaper options.

I have been tracking prices just using the notepad app on my phone, but it's tedious and sometimes difficult to navigate. Is there an app that makes price comparisons easier? I know some stores have their own standalone apps, but I don't want to download 5 different apps and constantly switch between them just to compare prices. I was hoping there is one app where I can track all prices for all stores in my area.

Thanks!

10 years ago when I was couponing there were all these great websites that would let me search the deals for every store around my area, but they don’t seem to be working any more. I just want to be able to type in something like “diced tomatoes” and find out if they are on sale anywhere.

Lately I am seeing a lot of F#$% Loblaws type posts due to price gouging and other bad behaviour. I am all for that, but I'm not sure what a reasonable alternative is.

Currently my regular shops are No Frills and Costco. I have a Costco credit card and get 2% back on a different card on groceries at No Frills, as well as PC Points. Are there any better options?

I've seen a few one off examples like pasta sauce being $1.97 at Walmart and $5 at Loblaws, but I am not sure if this is the norm. When visiting these other stores and comparing receipts, the prices seem to be basically all in line with each other when in the same time period (not prices from 1 yr ago, for example).

There are differences, but they tend to even out more or less, and the idea that I'll be going and doing two different shops in the same day to secure some low double digit savings doesn't make a ton of sense to me. I guess I could see this for a high-price item, or for stocking up (e.g. meat in a chest freezer).

I've also seen a suggestion to visit asian or other third party smaller sellers, but in my mid-size city, the prices and quality are worse than what I get at either major retailer. Maybe that's more of a Toronto thing? Same with the local farmer's market - they want $13 for a half peck of apples for example.

Is there something I'm missing? Are there some obvious savings to be had here? Is Walmart or some other retailer consistently cheaper?

Hi everyone,

Recently I launched an app called My Cart! to help users compare grocery prices from different stores (currently Walmart, Aldi, Kroger, and HEB). The app also offers a bunch of recipes with their total costs compared among the same stores and lets you refine which ingredients you need.

While the app is out on both app stores, it is still a work in progress and I would love to know if this is something that people would be interested in using or if it would be beneficial. The grocery aspect is still being refined and it may not be an exhaustive list of anything you would need but I am working to update the list of items and stores available!

Has anyone come across and application that compares ALL grocery prices and not just the deal circulars? I already use Flipp for comparing circulars but the vast majority of my staple grocery list never shows up on a local circular. With prices and availability becoming less stable I am finding it necessary to check all the stores that carry grocery items to see who has what at the best price at the time I need a particular staple item restocked. This is taking more time than I have and I really need something more streamlined.

I have a few main sources for groceries; Stop & Shop, Trader Joes, Aldi, and Fairway Market.

For the life of me, I cannot find any online circulars for them that would allow me to compare the cost of milk/eggs/bread etc...

... nor can I seem to figure out how to get a paper circular for anywhere but stop & shop.

Is there any good way to browse those costs without literally going to each store on a weekly basis and making a note of the prices?

Am I just an idiot and missing something?

TIA!

I'm wondering if anyone knows of good apps for basically keeping a database of grocery prices by unit to be able to easily see if an item or sale is a good deal or not.

Right now I use Price Cruncher and it is fairly close to perfect, but there are a couple things it's missing - barcode scanning would be nice, as well as the ability to make an account or something so that the database is accessible and current across devices. The history function is also not super user friendly and I wish you could choose which entry of an item to use as the default to crunch new entries against (for example, maybe an item went on a once in a lifetime sale and you don't want to always see that a good deal is 75% more expensive than the lowest price you've paid).

This is something I'd be willing to pay a few bucks for because I use it constantly and it's saved me so much money!! I'm surprised that there don't seem to be more options. Is this not something other people find interesting/useful?

Hey folks,

I have seen a few people ask in this group asking about ways to track prices of groceries and create shopping lists, so I would like to share with you a site I run which does just that:

https://www.whichgrocer.com

It allows you to create shopping lists for Woolworths,Coles and IGA, and shows you side by side what the prices are for those products to see where your bill would be lowest. Basically a bulk price checker that you can refresh the prices whenever you want. It can also show you the most cost effective way to buy all products in your list, if you don't mind visiting multiple stores. Theres a few other neat features also like showing price histories for products and all specials across all stores in one place.

I am continously improving the site and hope to give everyone the maximum value that I can from it so I would love to hear your feedback and suggestions.

P.S. Big thanks to the mods for allowing me to share this and being so welcoming into this group.

Edit: Added a quick demo of the site for those who want to see what its like without creating an account

Hi everyone,

Recently I launched my latest app, My Cart which is a meal planning app. The app provides dozens of recipes and their respective ingredients. You can select all of the ingredients you need and then the app will show you price comparisons among several grocery stores (Currently Walmart, Kroger, HEB, Aldi. Whole Foods and Target are next on the list to add). You can also use the generate feature which adds 1000s of additional recipes, their ingredients, and how to make them. You can also add individual items to your shopping list if you want to just shop for groceries that way and you can check out with any of the stores listed above. You then would schedule curbside pickup or delivery with the store.

Key features of the app include:

  • Dozens of in-house recipes + thousands you can search up

  • Price comparisons of recipes/items by store

  • No added costs or surcharges (we don't add fees to the checkout price or take any %)

  • Saving time from conventional in-store shopping

  • Cheaper than other Meal-provider apps (Hello fresh, Factor, Uber Eats, etc)

  • Easy Cancellation and the subscription occurs through Apple/Google so you don't provide payment info to us

Having launched (we have yet to post to Product Hunt or Indie Hackers), I am wondering if the price point is at the right spot. The app costs $4.99/Mo (Now $2.99) to use and looking at our install and conversion metrics, this seems to be a huge wall for most new users who download the app. When you first open the app, it walks you through the entire app and lays out the benefits of costs and time savings before it prompts you to sign up. I was hoping to get some feedback on the app and the price point and see what other people thought the app was worth a month.

I've seen a few posts over the years with people singling out certain grocery stores as being more expensive than others, so I decided to shop around to see how much truth there was to this. I picked a few reference items and tried to find the exact same item at each store, and noted the prices in the chart below (deviations where the reference brand or size wasn't available are noted). I have a family and work two jobs, so this took a couple months to complete so the prices may vary, but I checked in on a couple stores recently and their prices were still relatively close to this table.

To summarize, if you bought one of each item on the list, the community grocery stores were all pretty much the same overall price of around $85+/-, the volume stores were about 25% cheaper, Costco was about 35% cheaper (taking into consideration my missing $/lb price for the peppers), and Whole Foods was about 35% more expensive (mostly due to their meat prices).

For the 5 community stores I went to, if you shopped around and bought from the store with the cheapest price for each item, it would cost around $75 or a 12% savings.

This doesn't take into account sale prices, but should put to rest any notion that one store is gouging you more than another.

Just a quick note that the point of this wasn't to make an argument about who has the best produce or carries the most local items or how to save the most money while shopping. I realize I could have chosen cheaper eggs, or that some stores carry more local produce than others. This was simply to compare prices across different stores at face-value because I was getting tired of reading posts where people claimed Store A is a rip-off while someone else would claim that Store B was actually the most expensive, but no one ever provided any numbers. I prefer an evidence based argument, so I decided to put the claims to the test.

If you prefer to save more money by buying cheaper eggs or no-name brands, or you want to drive across town to get fresher veggies from somewhere else, go for it. Full disclaimer that my wife works at SOF and we get 10% off there, but Thrifty's is 1/4 of the distance to drive to from our house so we do most of our small-item shopping there. But for large quantities of non-perishables, freezables, and fruit, we're driving to Costco!

I live near major grocery stores and the price of even simple items like berries vary 4X in a single week! Any good website/apps that can track major grocery stores and show me prices in almost real time.
It would be even better if I can add trackers which notify me when a certain item hits a certain price.
I have tried a few apps from Google Play, some provides offers, some provides coupons but none track prices.
