Indecision about Convertible Car Seats
I have the Nuna rava and baby gear lab rated it pretty high. It’s on sale rn too for $399 at Nordstrom (only the color named Curated) . ETA: we purchased the Chicco Clear Tex All in one as well- but have yet to install it since my little is usually in the car with me or we take my car. Those were my top two after lots of research More on reddit.com

Safest convertible car seat for baby?
If you’re in the US, the organization you’re looking for is NHTSA, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, part of the federal Dept of Transportation. It’s the federal agency charged with vehicle safety, including car seats. They use standardized measures to test and rate car seats, and all car seats sold in the US meet their safety standards. They don’t even rate safety- it’s either a pass or a fail, in which case it can’t be sold. There are some car seats that might meet different safety standards in other countries, but in the US, any seat you buy will be fine. More on reddit.com

December 17, 2025 - Convertible car seats are meant to be a "buy once, cry once" solution to child restraints, but how they perform in the real world depends heavily on the vehicle they're installed in. To accurately reflect this reality, we tested each seat across a range of popular vehicles that represent the spectrum of American family transportation. January 3, 2025 -

My LO is rapidly outgrowing her infant car seat and we need to switch to a convertible ASAP but we are having indecision and seeking advice/recommendations/experience.

Important to us:

  1. Safety, good crash test ratings (not sure whose crash test ratings to trust)

  2. rear facing as long as possible

  3. preferably car seats withOUT flame retardant chemicals

  4. preferably car seat that is easy to clean

  5. slim fit might be nice since Mom likes to sit in the back with the baby and we may have another HOWEVER we anticipating our baby to be above average height so she might benefit from extra leg room

We are currently considering Chicco Nextfit Max ClearTex (more leg room) vs. Britax Poplar S (Slim Fit & anti-rebound bar). However, some websites (Baby Gear Lab) gives these average crash test ratings. We are a little confused and open to all advice and alternative car seats. We would like to make the decision soonish. Thank you in advance for all your help. We are in the United States.

r/CPST on Reddit: Recommendations for the Safest convertible car seat?
June 22, 2025 -

Hi, I’m looking for a recommendation on the safest convertible car seat. Not an all-in-one, just a convertible. I am getting so overwhelmed by the options, it seems like every site I found is sponsored, so I don’t trust that.

I found the Chicco NextFit Zip as highest rated on a couple sites - but it’s discontinued!

My only concern is safety rating, with easy to clean being relevant but not super necessary (we have a handheld spray vacuum cleaner). Budget is up to $400-ish. We have mid size SUV and this is the only car seat in it, so size isn’t an issue.

December 17, 2025 - Our comments: MESA is packed with safety and convenience features and is compatible with UPPAbaby Vista & Cruz strollers. The base is a breeze to install with the self-ratcheting lower LATCH connectors. Seatbelt install is also pretty easy thanks to a lockoff on base. This model fits preemies and small newborns well. MESA has a 3-year warranty with product registration. See our complete UPPAbaby MESA review. Convertible seats can be used either rear-facing or forward-facing.

r/ScienceBasedParenting on Reddit: Swivel convertible car seats.. sacrificing safety for convenience ?
June 17, 2025 -

The time has come to switch my little to convertible car seat so I have been trying to find one that gets top safety ratings as well as (ideally) swivel for easier in/out. It seems that many of the top rated models on consumer reports (i.e. Chico NextFit, Britax) for safety do not have the swivel. Am I missing something? Does the swivel feature make the seat inherently a bit less safe?

It appears that the Baby Jogger is the only swivel convertible car seat that is in the top 5 on consumer reports. It's pricy at ~$500. Worth it?

Side note--interesting to me that the Chico models are rated so highly for safety and did so well in crashes when they only allow for rear facing up to 40 lb and 43 in (instead of 50 lb & 49 in like many other models).

From what I can tell, safety doesn't go into that score and therefore isn't considered for rankings. For instance, their top seat Chicco NextFit Zip gets high scores in installation related ratings but when you go to their safety section it simply says "BEST." You click on the little i to get the following clarification: Ratings of BASIC, BETTER, and BEST reflect a seat's relative performance when compared to the performance of similar models. The Baby Jogger City Turn and Graco Turn2Me also got BEST and Evenflo Gold Revolve360 got BETTER. Many rotating car seats including Joie Spin360, Cybex Sirona, Safety 1st Turn and Go, Chicco Fit360, etc. appear to have not been tested at all since I couldn't find any ratings for them. Babygearlab does their own testing and it seems the rotating seats are getting around the same safety ratings as the non-rotating ones. Graco Turn2Me and Baby Jogger City Turn got the best safety ratings out of rotating car seats from their tests, with Cybex Sirona and Chicco Fit360 tied for 3rd. Out of what they believed to be the 22 best convertible car seats, rotating car seats placed at #1, #8, #14, and #22 when sorting by safety, so they truly run the spectrum. If rotation is important to you, there appears to be no reason to believe you're sacrificing safety to get it. When factoring in convenience, comfort, etc. as well as safety, Chicco Fit360 gets the #2 spot, Cybex Sirona gets #4, and Baby Jogger CityTurn gets #5 from BabyGearLab out of all convertible carseats. Again though, there are some rotating car seats that they didn't test at all. A lack of testing doesn't necessarily mean it's unsafe.

The Swedish plus test is the most rigorous test there is for infant/child car seats. The certification requires children to be seated rear faced, which is why they generally do not test/certify swivel seats as these generally have the ability forward face the child. https://www.vti.se/en/services/laboratory-and-testing/crash-safety-testing/child-restraint-systems

3 weeks ago - That’s because of a key potential safety benefit. During our crash tests, we found that in nearly 75 percent of the infant seats we tested, the head of a 12-month-old child dummy came into contact with the simulated front seatback. That type of impact could injure a child. By contrast, in almost all the rear-facing convertible seats, the head of the dummy avoided contact. (Learn more about how we test car seats.)

November 18, 2025 - The Scenera Next sells for $60, which is a bargain compared with many convertible car seats (the Graco Extend2Fit, our favorite convertible seat for everyday use, costs around $250). The seat gets strong safety ratings from NHTSA, and given its low weight and heft and easy-enough install, we think it’s the best option available for an on-the-go or backup car seat.

Safety 1st Guide 65 Car Seat Review - Consumer Reports
October 23, 2025 - Rather, the purpose of our new tests is to differentiate the seats’ performance on a scale that ranks the performance of tested seats ranging from “basic” to “best.” Our focus on providing an “extra margin” of safety, rather than on determining whether a seat is safe or not, is based on the fact that any car seat sold in the U.S. already must provide an essential level of safety under the government standards. The new test conditions were carefully designed to simulate the interior environment and forces encountered during a crash in contemporary vehicles. Changes from the way that convertible seats were rated previously include using a test bench that better simulates the vehicle seat design from a contemporary vehicle, with more representative cushion stiffness and seat geometry and incorporation of a “blocker” to simulate a front seatback.
