The CSS Profile is an online application used by colleges and scholarship programs to award non-federal institutional aid.

November 5, 2025 - The CSS Profile is administered by the College Board, which states: "Each year CSS Profile unlocks access to more than $10 billion in nonfederal aid to thousands of students." In addition, the CSS Profile more closely examines a family's financial situation to award aid to students with the most financial need.

The CSS Profile is offered by the College Board. Similar to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), colleges and universities use the CSS profile to determine financial aid packages for their applicants. Students should also complete the FAFSA, even if their college requires the CSS Profile, as the CSS Profile isn't an exact replacement for the FAFSA.

September 24, 2025 - The CSS Profile requires tax documents from the same year as the FAFSA, which is required for students interested in receiving federal financial aid. Students who have already completed the FAFSA can use much of the same documentation for the CSS Profile. On both forms, families report their income from two years prior to the year a student plans to attend college.

A major difference between the FAFSA and the CSS Profile is that the CSS Profile takes the value of your house into account when determining ability to pay, while the FAFSA does not. The EFC is usually subtracted from the cost of attendance (COA) of the college or university to determine a student's financial need. If COA > EFC , then a student has financial need. Eligibility for a number of federal, state, local, and institutional aid programs is based on a student's EFC.

Similar to the FAFSA, the CSS Profile is a financial aid application required by certain colleges for the purpose of awarding nonfederal aid.
