VSCode extensions have very limited control over the UI of the editor confused
Our Command-K and Copilot++ features aren’t possible as extensions. Same for much of what we want to build in the future! Answer from Jakob on forum.cursor.com

I'm trying to decide between Cursor and VS Code as my main code editor. I know both have good integration with LLMs, but I'm curious about other factors. What are some pros and cons you've experienced with each? I'd love to hear about performance, UI/UX, extensions, and any other key differences.

I mean cursor is just a vscode clone with their own copilot thing built in. Problem with it - it's a tiny startup. If they fail, you're not getting updates. If they're slow to integrate vscode upstream, you're not getting updates, etc. That said it's very easy to switch back to vscode since cursor is vscode. I used it for a hot second and just felt pretty "meh". I feel pretty meh about all the AI coding tools to be fair.

It doesn't matter at all, just pick whatever feels the most comfortable to you.
How do I install this VS Code extension?
I have tried but I can’t find the vsix format and I copied and pasted from VSCode the folder and that didn’t work either. More on forum.cursor.com
Why is Cursor not an Extension to VS-Code?
I see several usability issues with the editor itself. Why is Cursor not built as an Extension, instead of a fork from VS-Code? More on forum.cursor.com

Does Cursor allow you to use regular vscode extensions and UI changes?
I’m pretty sure everything syncs. When I moved over to cursor everything was there. Might need to check on the Shortcuts, not sure about them. More on reddit.com

April 8, 2025 - That said, the Open VSX marketplace has many fewer extensions and lower usage than Microsoft’s marketplace. Anysphere’s Cursor nevertheless provides access to VS Code marketplace extensions including Microsoft’s C/C++ extension and the C# DevKit, from within the Cursor IDE, as well as a setup option to import extensions from a VS Code installation.

By preserving VSCode’s familiar interface and comprehensive extension ecosystem, Cursor lowers developers’ adoption barriers, making the transition to an AI-powered IDE feel like a natural, seamless upgrade rather than a disruptive technological change.
