I need to make a small city satellite map for my Call of Cthulhu campaign, a rural city with a small population, no skyscrapers or tall buildings, few technologies, and old stuff, but still in 2023.
Is there a city mapmaker online that could do something like this?
I have some TTRPG games in my head that I wanna run, but would need to make maps for. Both of them are in a more modern setting, which is weirdly hard to find programs for. One is a normal human sized one, for common battle maps. The other game is a mech game, so for that I would need an even bigger scale for the tiles of the map. Any recommendations for programs I could use?

Hello all,
Basically what the title says. I'm making a dungeon style game, where my players will be exploring an ancient city ruin that's just been unearthed in a desert. I plan on mapping the entire city, including every room in every building.
To do this, I'm thinking the best approach is to find/make a city map I like and cut it into sections to zoom in on. I tried using DonJon's generator, and don't like how circular they come out, or the text over top. I'd love a way to make my own instead of using a generator, however, if there's a generator that works for my goal here better I'm happy to use it. I don't need the info on each part, just a blank map. I'm willing to pay for it if it provides what I need.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.
I'm a graphic designer needing to make a map for a client (Don't even ask why they won't use Google maps).
I commented this post to help someone on a Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/citiesskylinesmods/2522664637971747/ - this includes a photo set I cant post here due to Reddit restrictions of one per post), It explains how to make a custom map of any area and its very useful. So, the post said:

Its pretty simple to make a custom map in Cities : Skylines, but a couple of the steps are a bit fiddly (namely using the Google Map Customiser; its not so intuitive).
What I tend to use is โterrain.partyโ, โGoogle Map Customiserโ, Fireshot, and Photoshop / Gimp.
http://www.chengfolio.com/google_map_customizer
https://terrain.party/
Step 1:
Terrain.party gives you a terrain height map that you download off a world map, you can zoom in or out but if you want a real scale then leave it at 18km. Download it and LEAVE THE TAB OPEN.
Step 2:
Visit Google Map Customiser and using a dimension of 4000 x 4000, zoom to exactly the right zoom detail level for the area you want, line up the top left corner exactly with the grid on terrain party and then only use the scroll bars to navigate around.
Step 3:
Customise the map to have high contrast rivers, roads, and transit using this tool. I use black for main roads (as there will be more and its easier on the eye), dark grey for highways and purple for railways, and greeny-cyan for rivers / lakes. Switch all labels off.
Step 4
Install Fireshot in Google Chrome and use it to capture the entire page (after closing the menu in Google Map Customiser) and save as a .png.
Step 5
Get the Overlayer v2 mod off the workshop, and importantly get the green template image off the same page.
Step 6
Open the FireShot capture in Photoshop or other decent image editor, and the template.
Step 7
Put the template in the top left hand corner and resize it PROPORTIONALLY so it covers the map area you want to use. (May need opacity effect to see)
Step 8
Crop the main image to match the template.
Step 9
Remove all areas of the map between the roads except lakes. Use a tolerance of 0 (or 2 max) to select your areas with the Magic Wand Tool and โContiguousโ set to off (if in Photoshop)
Remove the sea. You should have a transparent image with just roads, rivers, railways and larger bodies of water (not the sea).
Step 10
Check the image size is exactly square and make it so if it isnโt. (Image Size option) Save the image as โoverlay.pngโ in the โ../common/Cities_Skylines/Filesโ directory of your steamapps folder.
Step 11
Unzip the heightmap file from terrain.party in to the โ..\<User>\AppData\Local\Colossal Order\Cities_Skylines\Addons\MapEditor\Heightmapsโ directory of your Skylines install.
Step 12
In Skylines, open the map editor, and Import Height map. Look at them all, but I find the second most detailed one is the best.
Step 13
Edit the map, add river channels in the proper place using the mod icon toggle (blue ! point), smooth the coastline etc, add trees, rocks etc. make the map valid and save it.
Step 14
If you want a real place, build a dummy village to activate the landscaping tool out of the way somewhere.
Last step
Play the game, overlay the....overlay ๐ค and trace roads, then enjoy!!
NOTE:
---------
Each time you load the game you may have to scale the overlay a tiny bit. Don't let appearances deceive you, and leave it in position, just use "." to increase the size ever so slightly until the overlay is over roads in at least two places on the map (preferably at the bottom left and bottom right.)
Hi Iโm looking for a free website to generate nice looking and decorative maps of existing cityโs/countries, to use in a design project. Iโm gonna make a poster wall, with a lot of different maps.. Iโm looking for a website kinda like www.mapiful.com but a free version where I can download high quality maps
Thx!
Straight forward question. Does anyone know of an application/website to procedurally generate City maps? Up to this point Iโve just been stealing real city maps of actual cities and removing the labels, but it feels kinda cheap.
Hi everyone! Iโm looking for the best place to get prints of city maps (b/w street network ones) framed or unframed? Are there stores in Toronto or better to order online?
Thanks in advance!
I'm gonna run a campaing that takes place in modern times and i'd like to make a map for the city(not a battle map), I'd prefer if it was customizable and not just a generator so i can make a port and parks
(also sorry for my bad grammar)
Hi. I'm planning to run a campaign in a 1970s Soviet crime setting and I'm looking for a good map generator to meet my demands. Can someone in the comments point me to the right direction?
Trying to figure out the best software to get to make actual town or city maps. Yeah, Dungeondraft seems decent for battlemaps, (Dungeon Alchemist is really blowing me away from recent update and youtube I've seen on it). And Inkarnate and Wonderdraft are good for region and world maps...
But what about the in-between? Mapping out a "home base" town map for example. I've done these by hand in the past, and now using photoshop - but seems very little for settlements.
And if no one knows a good software for this - anyone know any png assets to use in photoshop/GIMP or illustrator/Inkscape?
Thanks all
I am building on a world set in the 90s. Making a map with gimp is quite tedious and complicated, so I am looking for a map making tool to create a city map... ...but all I can find are tools to make fantasy/medieval maps.
So, does anyone know a tool to create modern, non-fantasy city maps?
Hi all!
I've got a modern era super hero themed RPG coming up set in a fictional New England mega city, and I'm wondering there are any good map creators/generators out there for this sort of thing? I've looked and only seen fantasy-based one so far.
I've been toying with the idea of turning my city into a physical map for a bit of fun โ you know, like playing detective and marking spots. I've considered using Google Maps, but when I zoom out, it loses detail and includes too much irrelevant information. Any suggestions or methods you've used for creating personalized map prints? Appreciate any help or recommendations!
I made a map showing Toronto's pre-amalgamation City Council Wards. I have wanted to make something like this for a while, but couldn't as I couldn't find information on the the old wards. However I finally have so I made this map to share with you all. For those that don't know, prior to amalgamation in 1998 each city had its own Council and Mayor and so you can now see what ward you would be in if we were still separate city's.
Of course the Toronto has grown since then so its impossible to say what the city council maps would look like today so this is just for fun. This map is based off the 1991 ward map which was the most recent revision before amalgamation. Also as far as I can tell the local wards didn't have names only numbers (Metro Wards had names though), so I have given them names just to help tell them apart.
At a glance, including the Mayors the City Council sizes were as follows:
Toronto City Council = 17 Members
Scarborough City Council = 15 Members
North York City Council = 15 Members
Etobicoke City Council = 12 Members
York City Council = 9 Members
East York Borough Council = 5 Members
Lastly Metro Council had 28 Members. (You can find its map if you scroll down to the bottom of the list and just click the check box to enable it). Seats were allocated as follows:
Toronto = 8
North York = 7
Scarborough = 6
Etobicoke = 4
York = 2
East York = 1
Current Toronto City Council is actually 3 seats smaller then Metro when you don't include the Mayor. You could argue Toronto City Council should at least have 29 members (including the Mayor) to match Metro.
We know that after amalgamation local representation went down the shiter and issues that were once confined to one part of Metro became everyone's business. However I wanted to see what the Councillor to Resident Ration would be today under this system. Toronto City Council currently has 25 members equalling a ration of 1:111,774 (1 Councillor per 111,774 Residents). Under the old system the Councillor to Resident Ration with current populations would be as follows:
City of Toronto (Pop: 841, 236) = 1:52,577
City of North York (Pop: 683,511) = 1:48,822
City of Scarborough (Pop: 629,941) = 1:44,995
City of Etobicoke (Pop: 376,237) = 1:31,353
City of York (Pop: 146,828) = 1:18,353
Borough of East York (Pop: 116,399) = 1:29,099
Metro Toronto Council (Pop: 2,794,356) = 1:99,798
As we can tell from this, while everyone lost representation, York got absolutely hammered the hardest by amalgamation in this regard.
Does anybody know any good (preferably free) city map makers/generators for fantasy settings?
Thanks in advance
I'm currently trying to find a program, figured I'd ask here while I also search myself. I'm looking for a program that would either randomly generate a city map or that would allow me to make one manually. It would need to be a top-down map.
Iโm planning a trip and would like to create a personalized map to help me visualize the route and highlight specific cities or destinations along the way. I want to mark key locations with custom markers (like pins or icons) and possibly add some details to each point, such as city names. My goal is to have a clear visual overview of my trip route to help with planning
Iโm looking for a tool or platform that allows me to do this easily. Can anyone recommend a good tool for this purpose, or any tips on how to set up such a map?
