I manage an analytics team, have 2 prior years experience as an analyst, a few tips to button up your skillset:
-
Learn SQL
-
Learn more SQL
-
Take power BI courses
-
Learn more SQL again
-
Take Excel Courses
-
LQS but backwards
Focus on learning as much of the hard skills as you can at first. Excel and power BI/other tools are relatively intuitive. Other skills (business sense, visualization skills, etc) really only come on the job. Your creativity with SQL will also grow at your first job based on however your available data is structured, but learning the core concepts first will create a good foundation.
There’s a very decent chance you won’t get your dream job right away - don’t let that discourage you.
Apply to every single role that has “analyst” in the title. Just get in the door somewhere. I’m biased here because of how much it helped me learn, but I would focus on trying to find a business analyst/operations analyst role. It’s incredibly valuable to see how the business runs at the ground floor, especially early in your career.
