It continues to get stuck every time a new BIOS update comes out and can only be updated via BIOS recovery. ... Recent one on a Precision 5520 took 20 minutes. I think I may have skipped one revision before this one. ... Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes.

February 11, 2022 - Their firmware update utility is spotty as hell and always has been, so just go to the product support update page for your model and download all known current updates one at a time as individual installation files; you're always better off doing the BIOS update separately by itself in-between reboots anyway, and you can manually suspend BitLocker, which I recommend doing from PowerShell and immediately before running the standalone installer. You can even set it up to leave BitLocker off until you manually turn it back on from CLI again when done, solves a world of problems. Give it another hour and if it still doesn't snap out of it just do the hard power cycle and hope for the best; Dells rarely brick over a borked BIOS install anymore.

I just recently got my inspiron laptop and after shutting it down and booting it back up again I got hit with a BIOS update and it’s been stuck at 1% for about 20-30 minutes now. Any suggestions?

bro let it take how ever long it wants to. if you break power supply, youll have to wait forever so dont touch it or restart it or remove battery or unplug bios bricked = laptop into bin

What i have done was force restart kept out the power plug when getting it to bios menu with ctrl + esc and then went to rollback it tells me to plug in ac then press f1 and it loaded passed my frozen point

Today I installed a BIOS update (Dell Precision 7530 and 7730 System BIOS - 1.35.0 - 21.14 MB - Critical) on my Precision 7730 and right after it restarted everything became very very slow. It's lagging so much I'm struggling to write this post while having to wait every 2 seconds for the text I typed to show. I see nothing abnormal on Task Manager. It was working fine without any issues until this update today.

What can I do about this? Is it possible to undo this update?

Adding a top-level comment here to state that the power supply issue worked for me too. My wife was on with her company tech support all morning and they were about to send her a new laptop (!) but I checked Task Manager -> Performance and the speed was at 0.20 GHz. Just unplugging the power supply fixed it and after a reboot with the cord plugged in it's still fine. I guess the update temporarily confused the BIOS about the power supply. I'd post a pic but not allowed here.

Had the same problem after some Dell command updates. Unplugged the cable from the dock and CPU speed directly increased. Thanks for this simple solution.

You restarted the machine during stage 0, where it's doing all the preliminary work before asking to restart. In addition to putting this on the e-cores, once those updates are installed you will get a percentage. This can be anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours.

This is the third time this happens to me with a brand new, expensive Dell laptop. It seriously affects my workday. At some point during the night, the laptop decides to update its firmware, and gets itself stuck at zero, until the morning when I arrive at the office. Now, I have no way of starting the computer, as it wont power down. Its fans are going loud and there is no progress. Please, can anyone assist with this? What do I do?

Unplug all of your USBs if any plugged in. There's a issue with certain usb devices halting bios upgrades.

Hold the power button down for 10-30 seconds, until it powers down. it should be fine as it hasn't started the update process yet. In the worst case, Dells have a good BIOS recovery function.

Yes, using a normal monitor 'may' fix this issue you are experiencing. Well, the updates for the bios are usually marked critical ( not always anyway ), but mainly because they could be fixing some security issue with the intel cpu. Thing is, as far as I know there are no real exploits in the wild + there's the antivirus and the fixes added to windows... so all these bios fixes effectively slow down the cpu only, from my personal point of view. Unless one of the newer bioses adds support to a quicker ram ( example ) or adds support for an USB-C port of a graphics card you ARE using or planning to buy ( it's a real case scenario )... or fixes a bug you ar experiencing ( you are not , by your own admission, having issues up to now )... just avoid . Personal opinion, anyway.

While waiting for a reply I read and watched a lot about updating the BIOS. My current version is 2.16.1 on a Win 10 Pro build 19044.2251.After 2 hours of a black screen, I crossed my fingers and powered down. Rebooted.I pulled everything off, anything connected to the computer, pulled drives, trying to get to a bare bones system. Double check that I did not have BitLocker on, no passwords in BIOS.I tried again with 2.17.1, same thing. Tried with booting to USB, same thing.Did a bunch of other updates, no problem.Tried 2.18.1, same problem. The only thing I have not tried is going backwards with the BIOS. At this point I put everything back together because I have to work on some images.But I would like to be able to update the BIOS.So still looking for suggestions.

Hey, this is a question out of curiosity, Does anything happen when doing a stand alone bios rewrite and update (downloaded from dell website) and a automatic windows update runs during the time between it restarts. Just wanted to know as its taking a long time to load.

Its solved ,what worked was if system get stuck during a bios update on a automatic windows update just power off system by holding power button and on it again, bios update should start right after system turns on This scared the soul out of me as I thought that a windows update before pc restarts during the bios update might corrupt the bios or brick something, glad everything worked out. Thanks developers for the fail safes.

First, try restarting the computer. If that doesn’t work, run the Windows Update troubleshooter. If the issue persists, try starting the computer in Safe Mode or using Startup Repair. Lastly consider a system restore or even a clean install of Windows if none of the previous works.

I recently just downloaded BIOS update for my alienware R14 from Dell and it is my worst nightmare. Friday night I downloaded the BIOS update from Dell and its been my worst experience i ever had with them. My PC was working fine, did the BIOS update and it took an hour for my computer to boot up. I did get the courage once to restart and had a heart attack because i just had the black screen looping and my keyboard lit up for a minute and went dark. Finally after an hour or more it finally came on and I know this is not normal. The BIOS update came out in January but it was corrupted and this one was suppose to be the fix. Well it definitely did not fix anything, it has just created stress and lose sleep because this pc was a lot of money and I just cant fo buy another one on a whim. Tomorrow I am calling Dell Tech and they need to fix whatever went wrong and if they dont i dont know what to do. My computer is not getting turned off until I speak to them. Is anyone else having an issue with this BIOS update?

I it was just a BIOS issue, it’s possible you could roll it back to a previous version. Also, might be worth running the onboard hardware diagnostics… just to be sure.

Alas, your system hasn't posted. There is nothing you can do here other than shut it down imo. It will sit at this screen indefinitely. Any warranty? Maybe give Dell a shout and see what they have to say.
