Hi demon2192, Thank you for your prompt response. Error code 2000: 0146 may imply a possible 'hard drive' failure. For more decisive results, I recommend you to run a 'Custom Test' on the laptop's 'Hard Drive'. 'Custom Test' is an advanced diagnostic test and is capable of producing more reliable results. Follow the steps listed below to launch the hard drive custom test:- Power off the laptop (Ensure that AC Adapter cable is plugged in)- Power on the laptop and repeatedly tap key - Select option 'Diagnostics' Here are some screen shots demonstrating the progress of the PSA+ Diagnostics:              Tap if color bars appear (Refer to the image above)    If 2000:0146 error appears, please ignore the message and go ahead with the testing    Tap to launch 32 bit Diagnostics (Following screen appears):    From the factory the system's 'hard drive' will include a hidden partition with 32 bit Dell Diagnostics. After the completion of basic diagnostic process, you will be asked to continue to this Diagnostics program. If for some reason the hidden partition is not found on the hard drive, you will be presented with the option to insert the Resource DVD. Following screen appears in that case:   If required, use the Resource CD and follow the steps given below:- Insert Recovery CD- Shut down and restart the desktop- When Dell logo appears, immediately tap repeatedly NOTE: If you wait too long and the operating system logo appears, continue to wait until you see the Microsoft Windows desktop; then shut down your computer and try again.- When the boot device list appears, highlight the option CD/DVD/CD-RW and press - Boot from CD-ROM from the menu that appears and press - This message appears ‘Press any key to boot from the CD’ - Promptly hit NOTE: If you wait too long and Dell Diagnostic screen does not appear, then, shut down your computer and repeat all steps. (Following screen appears):   - Press When the Dell Diagnostics main menu appears, select the test you want to run - Select Custom Test (Refer to image below)    - Click <+> sign besides 'Hard Drive' (Refer to image below)- Highlight 'SATA Disk'- Place a tick mark in 'Non-Interactive Tests Only'- Click 'Run Test'   - For any problem encountered during a test, a message appears with an error code and a description of the problem- Write down the error code and problem description exactly as it appears Do reply with the findings. I would be glad to assist. Answer from DELL-Saurabh A on dell.com

0142 means the HDD has failed. I would recommend looking to get a SSD drive. Crucial is a good website as it lists SSDs by system model. Twice computer said 2000-0142 no hard drive, twice I was able to recover, what is going wrong? How can I figure out?
Most common/likely culprits are storage or RAM, it very well could be both. I would first download crystaldiskinfo and look at the stats of your drive, to see if it's heavily worn and/or known to be having errors. I would also run a memory stability test for 5-10 minutes, OCCT for example. More on reddit.com

r/techsupport on Reddit: Windows 10 Dell, Error Code 142 Help? (Hard Disk Replacement might be required? Recommendations?)
July 9, 2017 -

So a few days ago I was browsing my one year old laptop as normal, scrolling through reddit. I went to get a snack, came back, and I went to connect/unconnect to my internet since that always happens. I have my toolbar disappear when I'm not using it, so I went to click the internet icon in the toolbar. The networks didn't pop up, and I couldn't click anything else on my computer. My toolbar for some reason didn't disappear, so I powered off my computer (via the button) and powered it back on.

I got greeted with QR Code to scan and an annoying sound, and so I scanned it with my iPad and it says Critical Issue Found. Error Code: 142. Description: Hard Drive - self test unsuccessful , terminated.

Recommended Action: Replace Hard Drive. Your hard drive is operating outside of normal parameters and should be replaced.

Surprised, I just clicked continue on my laptop, and it said it was fixing the problem, and I never got the error screen again.

But now, after using my laptop for about an hour, the same thing happens. I am unable to click anything, and clicking my taskbar freezes it and prevents it from disappearing. When I restart, I don't get the error message again.

TLDR of above : Browsing Reddit innocently, when computer becomes unresponsive. I get an error message upon restarting (that takes me to my bios) and a hard disk replacement is recommended by Dell. My computer now becomes unresponsive after around 1 hour of use, but I never get the error message again.

So, do I just get a new hard drive? What caused the problem, and is this the only solution? My computer model is Dell Inspiron 5558, so if I need to get a hard drive, does it have to specifically match with Dell, or the Inspiron 5000 series? Basically, if I need to get a new hard drive, what type does it have to be?

Secondly, Dell's website recommends hard drives I should purchase. Should I actually buy from their site, or is it overpriced? I'm asking because when my laptop charging port had issues and I went to get it fixed, the guy working there said I should use a charger from their site specific to my model number, rather than buying one on Amazon.

Also, if I do need a new one, how do I back up my data? (Or just tell me to google this if an answer is more readily available/easy to understand via google, because I'm a bit iffy about it). Thanks so much.

Back in April, my Dell Inspiron desktop computer "crashed" saying there "was no hard drive, error 2000-0142." I got on my phone and found a video that guided me through resetting the BIOS and run diagnostics. At that time, I was running Windows 10, and installing Windows 11 "saved" the computer. For the last few months have been trying to only save created files on peripheral drives, watching the computer warily. Any time the power went out due to storms while I was on the computer, I would get a blue screen that said "something has gone wrong" and asked if I wanted to restart pc, to which I said yes, and it restarted every time. Yesterday, I left my computer on while I went out of the house for a while; the power did not go out in the house while I was gone, but I when I returned and turned on the monitor, I had gotten a different blue screen that said "something had gone wrong, and Windows needed to restart, but was stuck at 0%. Restarted and again had error 2000-0142. I assume it was a Windows update, possibly, that prompted this. I restarted and got stuck on the Dell opening screen, so I got my phone out again and found the same video I found before, and I swear, all I did was go into the BIOS as this person guided me, and she said make sure one setting was on SATA but if you had RAID make sure it was on that. Because I was following along, I had clicked SATA [it had been on RAID already] then clicked it back to RAID when she finished her sentence, and hit "apply" and exited BIOS. Tried to start the computer again and it booted fine.

What may be causing this? What should I do about it?
