I'm a marketing strategist (with marketing analytics). I certainly expect people to pay me, not only for my time but for the work that I do. If the person is wasting money on actions that wont work, just stopping the waste is already something of value that I don't do for free. I usually don't do the implementation. I can hire people to implement the strategy, I can manage people during the implementation, but the key part of my work is marketing strategy. It's like being the coach of a football team. They don't play, but the work they do can have a big impact (negatively or positively). That also can help understand some potential conflicts of interest in mixing strategy and implementation. If the coach also plays on the team, then the coach probably won't be so harsh on themself as they would be with a player. And coaches often need to be harsh or make unpopular decisions. Companies may need someone like me, but it doesn't mean they like me. Strategy can be an ugly job, finding many problems in what the company is doing. That can become a problem if I try to implement the strategy. If I do both strategy and implementation, it becomes a situation like "who watches the watchmen?" If I see myself doing something wrong, I may be the only one seeing that. Answer from alone_in_the_light on reddit.com

Marketing plan template
The most important thing to know about marketing plans is that the author is almost always the only one that reads it... or at least all of it. If you want to create something people will use, this is the structure of a concise deck format I've used for B2B with success. I've called it "Total Brand Awareness for Sales & Marketing." Structured like this... Purpose - who it's for and what it is Branding: Value Proposition: what you do for companies Branding: Brand Promise: what you do for your customers Product Brief: 1 paragraph descriptions of each product Product Detail: product-specific value propositions, features, how it aligns with brand value proposition, the one most important buyer persona, and talking points for sales discovery calls Buyer personas: 1 slide for each persona, bullet points for their goals, challenges, objections, purchase triggers, and your positioning for that persona Style guide: how you look and how you talk Social campaigns: what you're going to do on social media Content marketing strategies: a concise 1-slide plan of the amount and kind of content Paid media strategies: a concise 1-slide plan of keywords/sites/ABM points Sales & marketing library: links to all supporting documents People READ this and refer to it often. Digital Marketing Plan/Strategy
Digital marketing strategy/plan is a little more complex to elaborate on in a doc form, I'll second you in that sense that it's often more effective to have a conversation with your team in order to get all the details out. Because it is best explained and elaborated with the help of a presentation. But let me try to help you write one down. So, first, the components. I always write it out first as a list: - Objective (What do we want to achieve?) - Target market (Who are we targeting?) - Channels (Which channels will we use?) - Tactics (How will we execute it?) - Budget (How much are we willing to spend?) - Timeline (When do we want to achieve our objective?) Then I start to fill in the blanks with more specific information: Objective: What do we want to achieve? This is where you'll state your overall goals for the campaign. Be as specific as possible. For example, rather than saying "increase brand awareness," you could say "increase brand awareness by X%." Target market: Who are we targeting? This is where you'll define your target audience. Be as specific as possible here. In addition to defining them by age, location, and income, you could also include interests, behaviors, and other factors. Channels: Which channels will we use? This is where you'll list out the specific channels you'll be using to reach your target market. In addition to social media, online advertising, PR, and email marketing, you could also consider using other channels like events, print ads, or TV commercials. Tactics: How will we execute it? This is where you'll get into the nitty-gritty of how you'll execute your campaign. For each channel, you'll want to list out specific tactics you'll be using. For social media, this could include things like the number of posts per week/month, running paid ads, or partnering with influencers. For online advertising, this could include things like targeting key demographics, using Google AdWords, or retargeting website visitors. Budget: How much are we willing to spend? This is where you'll allocate a budget for your campaign. Be sure to allocate enough to cover all of your planned tactics. Timeline: When do we want to achieve our objective? This is where you'll set a timeline for your campaign. Depending on your objectives, you may want to set a shorter timeline for things like generating sales leads, or a longer timeline for things like increasing brand awareness. Additionally, I always prepare (and also indicate it in the plan) plans B, C, and D (if you get my point) in case something goes wrong or a channel/tactic doesn't work out. I prepare a part where there are solutions to problems that might occur. Hope this helps! :) More on reddit.com

What is a proposal in digital marketing?

A proposal in digital marketing (or a digital marketing proposal) is a comprehensive document that carefully lays down information about the digital marketing company, the services they offer, the pricing of these services, and other details. A marketing proposal, on the other hand, may be more broad in nature, and will include details about marketing strategy and goals (according to current trends), implementation and payment specifics, and terms and conditions.

r/marketing on Reddit: First client. What should a marketing strategy proposal look like?
December 27, 2023 -

Background: I’ve managed content/marketing for a high profile client for a few years and have recently had a real estate company with a 10k monthly ad budget reach out to ask if I consult. I’m no longer working for the high profile client and would like to consult.

Our call went well, they told me they needed more traffic to their website and UX help since their traffic isn’t converting and people aren’t using the tools or pages they should be.

They have a 80k email list. But because they currently have no marketing strategy, and have thrown money at ads that haven’t worked, I see myself spending 6-8 weeks researching, going through their data and putting together a content, ux and digital strategy for them before I even started to implement.

Wondering if expecting them to pay for this length of time spent on strategy is off the mark? I’ve went through their data and have seen a few issues with their seo, ux and ads, but still think they need a full plan in place before I start spending their ad dollars and this isn’t something I feel should be provided for free. I can’t in good faith send them an implementation plan of “I’ll be running ads, fix your seo, create a blog” before I analyze what’s going on and the best way to solve these issues. Curious what the marketing community thinks. Should I be packaging implementation into the strategy and pitch them all at once for everything? Should I be pitching them on smaller projects instead of 15k worth of work putting together a strategy to increase traffic, funnels to split test and fix UX issues?

Aside from that, was wondering if anyone might have advice for a one page proposal or willing to share a version of their client proposals? Everything on google keeps leading me to one page marketing plans, which is not what I’m looking for, and I’m leery of trusting chatgpts version without something to bench mark it against

As for the strategy fee, I totally get where you're coming from. Crafting a comprehensive plan takes time, effort, and a deep dive into their data. It's definitely not something you should be doing for free. Maybe consider breaking down your proposal into phases—start with a smaller fee for the initial analysis and strategy, then discuss the implementation phase separately. That way, they can see the value in your insights before committing to the whole shebang. And regarding the one-page proposal, simplicity is key. Highlight the pain points, your proposed solutions, and the potential impact. Maybe throw in a timeline and cost breakdown. As for benchmarks, maybe check out some successful agency proposals online for inspiration.
