Nothing wrong with the traditional haunted house setup, but I’m making one this year for my community and I’m looking for creative, unnerving, and unsettling ideas for my haunted house. The more unconventional the better but I want my guests to leave with something genuinely scary that isn’t just your rubber props, fake chainsaws, and the millionth actor in white face makeup with fake blood. I want new ideas, upsetting visuals (nothing too graphic or honestly expensive). Any ideas?

The best haunts I've ever visited played with not just sight and sound, but with smell. Nothing deeply unpleasant like rotten meat or shit, but like graveyard dirt, or (in the case of a Texas Chainsaw Massacre themed haunt) barbecue. It was enough to set me off guard, because you don't really expect to smell much more than fog juice in a haunt. It's almost invasive, smelling something unexpected, even if it's pleasant.

But I actually like this idea better--If you want to get a head start, pick up some cheap frames from them and print out haunted portraits on your printer to insert into them.

I've always wanted to do this! I had some scrap cardboard and cardstock laying around and decided to design and build a miniature haunted house :) I only made the facade but I'm thinking I could tackle the inside next season. The base walls were made using foam core. I used clear folder dividers for the window glass, cardstock for the siding and trim, foam for the stone at the bottom and did a few rounds of paint until I was happy with everything! Still not sure about the purple door. What do you guys think? How could I improve it?
