Star Fox 64 was an exceedingly high quality game. Very well made, fun to play and replay. In fact, it was designed to be replayed, as each play session was very short. It was all about finding secret routes and objectives to reach various levels, and improving high scores. Because the game was replayed so often, players heard the same bits of dialogue over and over. But the thing is, the writing and voice acting created the perfect storm, riding the fence between campy, hilarious, and cool. The whole game was basically a ceaseless barrage of the cast shooting clever quips at each other... heard over and over again by players. And it never even became tedious. People loved it every time they played. This lent itself well to players making running jokes and memes. Out of all the memorable lines in the game, I guess "Do a barrel roll!" was chosen as the most iconic. Answer from Secret_Wizard on reddit.com

I know it's a Star Fox quote, but I don't get exactly why it bled so much into popular culture, at least from a few years ago. Is there some kind of subtle in-joke to it I'm missing? Is it a pun?
I legitimately don't get it; why exactly was this quote so popular?

The quote became a meme because of the peculiarity of the quote out of context (and to an extent even in context) and because Star Fox's popularity. At some point 4chan users started using the quote a lot including in pranks and spread it around the internet. During the heyday of the user-submitted content site YTMND, Do A Barrel Roll was a popular meme that was picked up for its ability to mesh well with other memes. It died down for a while until Nintendo and Google started using it again.
