I have all-over body pain, but especially in the back and I personally love memory foam, but also you want a firm base, so personally I would get a firmer spring mattress with a memory foam topper for best of them both. Answer from bewarethes0ckm0nster on reddit.com

What type of mattress should be chosen to avoid back pain and improve sleep quality? Review of the literature - PMC
The mattress had the following characteristics: medium-firm surface based on these components: foam-encased Bonnell spring unit, densified fibre pad, super-soft foam, damask cover, semi-flex foundation, slick fibred; they had the same size as mattresses previously used by volunteers. Results revealed significant improvement for all parameters previously indicated [14]. At the end of the experimental phase at day 28, a back pain decrease of approximately 48% and an improvement of sleep quality of 55% were reported; such improvement correlated with a significant decrease in stress levels.

Is Your Spring Mattress Contributing To Back Pain? - SAMINA Sleep
October 30, 2025 - These temperature fluctuations disrupt sleep, which indirectly affects back pain, as the body doesn’t get a chance to fully rest and recover during lighter sleep. Since springs are prone to wearing out in high-use areas, certain parts of a spring mattress may sag more than others. This uneven wear causes dips in specific spots, making it difficult to find a comfortable sleep position.

May 31, 2023 - According to Justin, our beds can cause back pain because they don’t offer the proper support. “A mattress that’s so hard it doesn’t have any flexibility or bounce is not great,” he says. “Likewise, a mattress that’s so soft you sink into it and are encased like a mummy is also not ideal.” Spring mattresses can be ideal for reaching this middle ground of support.

r/Mattress on Reddit: Box spring causing back pain??
June 25, 2022 -

I bought a new mattress yesterday for the third time in a year and still woke up with lower back pain. Not being able to sleep more than 6 hours is getting old. I'm beginning to think my box spring is the culprit. Does anyone have a similar experience with this? I will feel stupid if it was the box spring the whole time but I'm running out of options to find better sleep. Should I try a bunkie board? Has anyone switched from box spring to bunkie with great success??

Why a Pocket Spring Mattress is the Ultimate Solution for Back Pain – Wakeup India
September 9, 2024 - One of the common misconceptions about mattresses is that firmer is always better for back pain. While too soft a mattress can cause the body to sink, leading to poor alignment, a mattress that is too firm can also create pressure points, especially in the shoulders and hips. A pocket spring mattress strikes the perfect balance between support and comfort.

Because of this, as you move into different positions through the night less springs are compressed less often. Allowing each spring to keep its ‘spring reflex’ and support your body fully, for longer, when its turn to do so arises. It’s unusual for a pocket spring mattress to cause you back pain because of failure in the springs.

r/Mattress on Reddit: Unsure how to tell if my mattress is the source of my daily back pain.
April 22, 2024 -

2 years back we bought a Helix Midnight Luxe and it's been great but about 3 months ago, I started waking up feeling really stiff all throughout my back that's most often at its worst when I get up in the morning and mostly loosens up after a few hours of movement. I've tried sleeping with a pillow under my legs when I'm on my back and in between my knees on my side with little to no relief.

There seems to be a lot of conflicting information and I can't seem to find good ways of determining:

How can I tell if it's the mattress?

If we decide to get something new, how do I decide if I need something firmer or softer?

We have a decent spring mattress in our guest room. If I sleep on that to see how it affects my back, is there a good time period where I can definitely say whether or not my back pain is from our Helix?

Has anyone heard any comments about the Helix brand in general and if back pain is common?

Side note: Seen doctors for x-rays and 2 MRIs for a pinched nerve in L4/L5 and was assured everything looked completely normal everywhere else. Any info is much appreciated.

Why Your Mattress Without Springs Might Be Causing Back Pain
April 11, 2025 - Without proper lifting power from springs, foam mattresses can allow the spine to sink, creating an unnatural curve. This results in back muscles working overtime to keep the spine aligned, causing discomfort or pain come morning.
