A down comforter (or silk, or down alternative) goes inside the duvet cover, creating the floofy duvet. If you want an oversized fit for your bed, you could order a king size comforter and a king size duvet cover (I seem to remember that there used to be companies who manufactured and sold oversized queen comforters but I don't know how common/easy to find those are nowadays). If you order a queen sized comforter and put it inside a king sized duvet cover, you're going to have a lot of empty space on the sides and around the actual comforter. The duvet cover has to fit your comforter properly. If you want something that's "middle of the road" for warmth, you want to look for an all season or year round weight, not anything marked extra warmth or specific for winter. Look for something in the 40oz./700-750 fill power range for a queen comforter. Answer from helenasbff on reddit.com

r/Bedding on Reddit: Explain down comforters and duvets like I’m 5?
January 23, 2024 -

Hi all, long time lurker, reading through the amazing posts by such knowledgeable people. I am looking for a new queen down comforter. Mine is almost 20 years old and flat as a pancake. Something mid- warm. I’d like it to hang over the sides of my queen size bed. Should I get a queen size down insert and a king duvet? What is a mid warmth down fill number you’d recommend? I’m so overwhelmed by all the choices!

Down vs Down Alternative
I’m very allergic to feathers so can’t compare, but I love my down alternative comforters from The Company Store. I’ve had some many years and they wash well in my home sized washer/dryer. I have midweight and when I want more warmth on winter I put on a flannel duvet cover (the comforters I have have spots on the corners to tie to the cover. More on reddit.com

Anyone have a truly plush down alternative comforter that sleeps cool?
I have an alpaca wool insert. I also love big fluffy blankets, but was struggling with temperature regulation and couldn't get down because of allergies. I spent a LOT of time searching on here. I was originally resistant to the alternatives to down/down alternative (silk, wool), but i freaking LOVE the alpaca wool insert. It is SO breathable. I didn't realize what I was missing. I couldn't go back to synthetic fibers because they just trap heat like crazy. It is definitely not as fluffy as down, but it is much fluffier than silk, it has nice weight, and i have layered it with nice cotton blankets. Someone else mentioned linen covers - I also have this on the insert, and think it helps quite a bit with breathability also. More on reddit.com

Comforter Suggestions, Brands and difference between down and down alternative
Benefits of down comforters- the best warmth to weight ratio, long lasting (if you buy a good one), natural materials. Cons - expensive, requires proper care and storage. Down alternatives - good warmth to weight- if you don’t need a super warm comforter, then a good down alternative maybe a better option. Cheaper than down, easy to clean and not fussy about care. Does it exist: down alternative comforter/duvet insert with filling that won't clump, lump, bunch up, and migrate into patches within two years?
Haven't had it more than a few months, but we bought a lightweight one from https://www.thewoolroom.com/ and it's been really good so far. It doesn't "drape" over you quite like a good down duvet, but it does seem to be more breathable and better for temperature regulation. More on reddit.com

The Best Down Alternative Comforters Start At Just $50
2 weeks ago - ✔️ Weight: Down alternative warmth is usually specified by its fill weight, rather than fill power like with a down comforter. Opt for lightweight if you're a hot sleeper or in a warmer climate, heavy or ultra-warm for colder temperatures, and all-season or mid-weight for something in-between that you can comfortably use year-round. ✔️ Corner loops: While you don't need to use a duvet cover with your comforter, most comforters feature four corner loops so that you can easily tie the comforter to a cover.
