Thoughts on the Dune Audiobooks?
I genuinely do not understand why people like the dune films
What’s up with all the hype surrounding the upcoming movie ‘Dune’, and why is it so popular?
Answer:
Dune is an extremely well regarded series of sci-fi novels by Frank Herbert and is widely considered to be extremely difficult to adapt faithfully.
Dennis Villenueve, the director, is one of the best sci-fi directors around right now; having directed Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 both of which were critically acclaimed for his vision and talent. People are excited that a very dense old sci-fi novel that was challenging to adapt in the past has been given to a director with a strong sense of vision and aesthetic who is also a huge sci-fi fan.

I tried listening to the OG and Messiah audiobooks but couldn't fully finish either of them, mainly due to to the lead narrator Simon Vance unfortunately. The voice switching and weird solo-full cast shtick was extremely awkward, made even worse by the fact that Vance himself has very little range in my opinion and I don't even think his voice for Paul works, which is a problem since he is the MC in these two stories.
In Messiah, the most exciting part in terms of narration for me was amusingly the Bronso of IX prologue interview. The person who narrated that (I think it's Scott Brick but I'm not completely sure) had an energy and range that Vance seemed unable to display.
