March 2, 2024 - I did pay already, once they countered with $400 I bought. It was on eBay, item number is/was “234519139519” ... Ah, I didn’t realize sellers received our phone numbers once an order was placed. That makes sense as I believe I have my number associated with the WhatsApp account.

August 1, 2023 - I think it's pretty clear it's a scam. There is no way they would offer that much for a rating, let alone message me for a job instead of the vice versa. I am more worried about, how did they find my number? They claimed it was from a website. Should I report it to ebay? Is that even a thing?

Hi,
I'm a pretty new seller. This is my second sale.
I'm currently selling a shirt on eBay for £16. I accepted offers.
The day after listing the shirt someone does an offer for £16 which I found slightly strange because he could have just clicked 'buy now'.
Anyway, I accepted the offer. It's legally binding so I have to send the shirt if he sends the money within a 5 day period.
I then got a message saying:
'I have a very busy schedule and won't be able to check my eBay messages, Kindly message me back with your WhatsApp number for quick and easy communication. Thanks.' This would take the conversation off site. However, he has enough time to browse eBay.
Does anyone know if this is a technique used by scammers? What should I do?

I never take an eBay conversations off the site. Let them know they can message you there. They may choose to not pay at which point you relist. If they pay, you ship and go from there. They may try to scam and get a refund by saying the package never arrived, is defective, etc., but generally don’t take the conversations offsite. Should issues arise, eBay has access to the messages.

Buyer (long time, lots of positive feedback) paid for item. Sent messaged me with shipping address which matched their ebay address but added a Whatsapp line, something like Whatsapp 1, 2, 3, 4, etc...
What is the purpose of that. Are they reselling and that is identifying their buyer. They haven't asked for anything outside the norm besides this. Any ideas?

A whatsapp number instead of a typical cell seams totally fine to me. Many of the people I work with from south america and asia (and even europe, though mostly spain) use whatsapp to communicate instead of their cell carrier. All of our group chats are on whatsapp and I know that two of them who I call occasionally both prefer whatsapp. could be something as simple as having horrible cell service at their home

February 14, 2021 - One of the accounts I believe to have been hacked, but again there does not seem any way to report this. Regarding scammers disguising the Whatsapp number, if eBay simply blocked the word and variants of the word "Whatsapp", the number would just be a senseless row of numbers.
