I used to work for a multi national company, you would not believe the amount of trouble this little difference caused. That and the date formatting.

Because both are interpretation of decimal marks adapted from Arabic. Due to influence of French Revolution, Europeans adopted commas while English speaking countries adopted points. Both are equally valid and equally odd looking for the opposite side.
