Donald Trump, the Ad Hominem Debater | by Jack Farrell | Medium
August 18, 2024 - Another fallacy would be Post-hoc reasoning, from the Latin Post hoc, ergo propter hoc (after this, therefore because of this): If B follows A, then A must have caused B. A final example would be the Slippery Slope argument. Here you take your opponent’s argument down a faulty pathway in order to predict dire consequences, or to reduce it to absurdity (Reductio ad adsurdum). What these all have in common, though, is a certain cleverness. Even though fallacious, they can be powerful in presentation. The lowest form of fallacy, though, and the one Trump triumphs with, is the Ad Hominem attack.

Ad Hominem Fallacy | Definition & Examples
February 6, 2025 - Circumstantial ad hominem (or appeal to motive) argues that a person’s circumstances, such as their job, political affiliation, or other vested interests, motivate their argument and thus it must be biased and false. For example, a salesperson may tell you that the pair of jeans you’re trying on looks good on you, and you may half-jokingly point out that of course they think so since they want to make a sale.

CMV: Heuristics like "ad hominem" are actually valid tactics in modern debate.
This argument is completely invalid because I can tell from the tone of your post and word choice that you clearly have an anti-capitalist agenda. More on reddit.com

CMV: In the last few years, the two most common informal fallacies on the left (apropos of cultural and political debates) include the genetic fallacy and circumstantial ad hominem, while on the right they are irrelevant/false authority and abusive ad hominem.
On the left, the genetic fallacy seems to be used quite a bit. For example, one of the reasons often given for eradicating the filibuster is that it has been used in the past for racist purposes This isn't a genetic fallacy. A genetic fallacy would involve this as the only reason given in an argument. Examining the origins of something as one of many aspects of inquiry in an argument doesn't make that argument fallacious. More broadly, though, your view is kinda meaningless, because fallacies are not metrizable such that we can talk about which ones occur more often than others. More on reddit.com

CMV: Ad Hominems that are based on actions are useful and acceptable in most circumstances
My view is not that personal attacks are always permissible. Ad Hominems are a logical fallacy, and should not be used in debates of formal logic. It is permissible, it's that it's just a known fault in human thinking. I think ad hominems are permissible when they suggest that the source is not a rational person The person not being a rational person doesn't mean the argument is incorrect or unsound. If their argument is incorrect or unsound then you should be able to demonstrate that by addressing the argument. For example, if a person is arguing that an act should not be a crime, it is relevant that person has been convicted of the crime. This is a presumption that can be defeated with other evidence, but it increases the degree of scrutiny with which other parties view the evidence. No, that's not really relevant at all. Political prisoners are a perfect example of why it's not relevant. If someone is saying that people should adopt a practice for their health, it is okay to point out that the source is obese or constantly sick. No, it's really not. A smoker that tells you not to start smoking because it's addictive and bad for your health isn't wrong. Are they a hypocrite? Sure, but they're not wrong. Something being a fallacy speaks to it's "truth value" not whether it's convincing. It is shifting the topic from the argument to the character flaw, and causes the person to have to defend themselves rather than the argument. More on reddit.com

What is argumentum ad hominem?
Argumentum ad hominem means “argument to the person” in Latin and it is commonly referred to as ad hominem argument or personal attack. Ad hominem arguments are used in debates to refute an argument by attacking the character of the person making it, instead of the logic or premise of the argument itself.

Final face-off between Trump and Biden is an ad-hominem presidential debate – Annenberg Media
October 26, 2020 - For Trump, it featured the repetition of old talking points and political tactics. For Biden, much of the debate was dedicated to correcting mistruths told about himself. The heart of either candidates' central messaging could be seen in the final question: Of what each would say to those who voted against them. Trump responded with a soaring review of his own administration: “Everybody had the best numbers,” he said, before repeating the lie that Biden would raise everyone’s taxes.

I did not count these. I only counted the obvious examples, such as when the President called CNN reporter John Harwood “a total loser!” (February 28).[i] ... As rhetorical scholars, we could choose to see these ad hominems as another example of Trump’s manner of rejecting deliberation “as a communal goal” (Neville-Shepherd 175).

August 21, 2024 - Tu quoque involves discrediting an argument by labeling the speaker as hypocritical and inconsistent (e.g., a politician advocating for funding public transportation may be dismissed by critics who point out that the politician regularly uses private jets for travel). Guilt by association targets a person based on perceived association with a group or individual (e.g., someone might argue that a professor who was educated at a controversial university is untrustworthy based solely on that association). Abusive ad hominem involves insulting an individual based on irrelevant personal characteristics, often appealing to societal prejudices (e.g., a person might discredit a CEO’s opinion by saying that, as a woman, she is “too emotional” to be a leader).

October 7, 2020 - Ad hominem is Latin for “to the person,” meaning it is an attack on a person’s character, personality or other attributes. In short, it’s a distraction. Using this method makes the argument all about the person and not at all about what they’re saying. Examples include, “There’s nothing smart about you, Joe,” from President Trump and “The fact is this man has no idea what he’s talking about,” from Joe Biden. Both of these quotes illustrate the emptiness that ad hominem attacks bring to an argument.
