r/1811 on Reddit: Question about FBI internship program
November 10, 2023 -

I am currently a freshmen in college, but I am also a veteran. And I am curious if anyone has done the internship program. Some questions I have What do you do during your time? Was it worth it? Do I go to DC or can I go to a more local office? Does it matter what degree I am pursuing? I have noticed the 2024 applications are closed so does anyone know when the 2025 applications open? What are some tips for applying?

The internship posts in late summer and closes late August or early September each year. Internships can be at field offices, but the majority are at HQ divisions. Not all of them are in DC as HQ elements are in several other locations. The Bureau loves to hire good interns for entry level jobs. Most interns who move to permanent start as a Admin for a squad, Admin at HQ, Surveillance or Security Specialist. Those are the positions I hear most about. There may be others. The Admin for a squad likely will not count toward 1811 pre time. I know the Surveillance position does. I am not sure about the Security Specialist or the HQ Admin as the job is very different from the field office admin position. One of the interns I worked with spend two years as an intern. Then became a HQ admin, then a field office analytic/tactical position and they have been an agent for about a year now. That path took about five years or six years to Quantico I think with an injury that postponed the academy for about eight months. Internships totally vary what you will do. It depends on where you are placed. I know folks who did data entry/admin, helped plan conferences, delivered visa application to embassies in DC, were used as role players for surveillance training, wrote computer code while others it was busy work. You can keep your internship during the school year to keep your clearance up if you work 16 hours a month I think. So the ideal is you get an internship near where you go to school and continue in the closest office during the year. If you go to HQ and are not near DC and go to school else where it can be a little more difficult as you need to be near a field office or RA and they have to have space for you during the school year. It might take one or two jobs in the Bureau to get to Quantico, but the Bureau loves to hire on boards for all open positions. It saves them time and money. They can move them around easily. They know the culture, the norms etc.

The FIB sub might have the answers to your questions. You ll probably be doing admin stuff. But I'm just guessing . I had an offer for the collegiate hiring initiative program after college, which I ultimately turned down because I felt like it wouldn't make me a strong candidate for an 1811 position later on.
