M9
For the first time, in the M9 FiiO uses an eight-layer HDI (High Density Interconnect) PCB with a thickness of only 0.08mm. While the M9 PCB is more complex than the one in the M7, it also allows more components to be integrated into a smaller space, leading to a smaller PCB and a smaller device ...

r/audiophile on Reddit: FiiO M9 Review (used as a source in 2 channel system and with headphones)
January 5, 2021 - FiiO makes a variety of generally affordable audio gear. The FiiO M9 is one of their mid-range DAP’s or Digital Audio Player. When I set out to buy a DAP or wireless DAC I weighed the pros and cons of each route. What I wanted was the convenience of digital music while also being able to use my iPhone and or Macbook.

New FiiO M9 owner seeking help with setting up player
Hey, no worries! I happened to get my hands on an M9 myself a couple of days ago, and trying out all the settings I totally understand how it can be intimidating. Although Fiio do their best in replying on their forum, I found a lot of things I couldn't figure out were actually not solved by a quick google search. Like the other person said, once you open the Fiio music app, every time you add new music you will have to scan your SD card, so the app knows which music is on there. Importantly, the whole app depends on the way that your audio files are tagged. For example, when you download an album, usually the files will contain tags for the track numbers, album name, artist, year, etc. When setting up your library for using on your Fiio (and any other music player) it is very important that these are set correctly. For example, one artist showed up twice in my Fiio, because half of their albums were under the artist tag "Boards of Canada" and the other half "Boards Of Canada" because the capital O differed. If you need any help with this I can give you some guides on what I did to automatically fix this for all my music. Aside from this, some functions might be a bit confusing or won't work properly. Like the WiFi transfer, USB DAC Latency, etc. I've figured out some ways around this so if you want to know anything feel free to ask :) More on reddit.com

SPDIF out on M9

I don’t know about the M9, but with the M15 you have to use the supplied short cable to get the coax SPDIF output from the device.

M9 volume wheel

I hate the wheel on the M9. If I try to spin it quickly it doesn't seem to do anything, but if I turn it slowly and methodically it takes forever to make any significant change in the volume because of how it's scaled. And it does seem to have gotten worse over time.

Secondhand Fiio m9 vs Fiio m7/m6 (or sony nw a55)

I had a very similar thread (here) comparing the M6, the NW-A55, and a couple of others that were suggested.

In the end, I selected the M6 (writeup here).

Why I went with the M6:

Fiio M7: Too expensive compared to the M6 and the NW-A55

Fiio M9: Way too expensive compared to everything else

Sony NW-A55: Proprietary connector, plus I disliked the lack of options in their Android player software (which is similar to the UI of their dedicated NW series).

I alternated several times between choosing the NW-A55 and the M6, but in the end, I decided on the M6 because:

  • Some friends have Fiios, and recommend them

  • Being Android, the M6 allows a choice of player software and more control, and I really like the Musicolet player interface on Android

The NW-A55 has the benefit of far superior battery life (four times), but has a proprietary connector, which is a pain. The M6 only runs for 10-12 hours on a charge, but it charges via USB C, so it's easy to find a charger if you need one.

The only complaint most people have with the M6 is the poor implementation of the streaming options like Tidal or Spotify, but I don't care about that, and if you're considering the NW-A55 or M7, you don't either.

FiiO M9 – When a great engineer befriends a great designer - Soundnews
February 17, 2019 - Power wise M9 is more than adequate powering down even desktop class headphones, at 170 mW per 32Ω on the 3.5 mm SE jack and 220mW per 32Ω on the 2.5 mm balanced jack it handles my Sennheiser HD660S pretty easy even on the 3.5mm SE output, volume wise it stays somewhere between 100-105 out of 120. FiiO used a very powerful Samsung made Bluetooth chip, it’s a novelty in FiiO’s portfolio because it’s not only a transmitter but can be a receiver as well (Dual Bluetooth), it can send and receive data in aptX, aptX-HD, SBC, LDAC and HWA.

FiiO M9 DAP Review - Headphone & Earphone Audio & Reviews
January 16, 2021 - Although the build quality of FiiO DAPs is already excellent, it was pleasing to see a steady increase in attention to detail in the design, from the above-mentioned more attractive case to the more precisely made, Apple-like packaging. Two headphone (3.5mm single-ended and 2.5mm balanced) and one USB-C port adorn the bottom. The latter change makes for two-way use, the M9 capable of both being a USB DAC and a USB transport.

Review: FiiO M9 - Wizard of the East - Headfonia
October 16, 2019 - The FiiO M9 is a nice little player, the full-aluminium body feels light yet sturdy. There is no crack and no gap on any place you can see or touch, FiiO even removed the screws ! Compared to the FiiO M7, I still prefer the prior one though.
