United Ways of California has a collaboration with myfreetaxes.org to offer free Federal and CA State tax filing through the TaxSlayer software. You can use this service through this link https://www.myfreetaxes.org/ . This was a far better option than CA's FTB's CalFile service. More on reddit.com

AARP Tax-Aide is free, and also doesn't have income limits or age or membership restrictions.

FYI all of these free tax programs are similar, but AARP usually will do more complicated returns than VITA. They all can do simple self-employment returns with no employees, subcontractors, or net loss.
They are also good options to e-file if your DIY return is getting rejected for AGI and you can't figure out why. Prior year AGI is not required through the free tax preparation programs because they verify your photo ID and Social Security card / ITIN letter.

Another option is to use one of the softwares like FreeTaxUSA to help fill it out, then before you pay them to submit it, just download the preview they give you and then take that and fill out the form with the CA FTB for free.

I haven't used it yet but www.freetaxusa.com is free for federal taxes, and includes Schedule C for self-employment income. You can also prepare prior tax year returns, currently going back to 2012.
State returns are currently $14.99 on that site. (Edited 5/15/2020)
Update 5/15/2020: for anyone who makes $66k or less a year, some of the nonprofit organizations that run free tax preparation programs have a new online option: https://www.getyourrefund.org/
It's also free, IRS-certified volunteers prepare your return, and they can do 2016 - 2019 tax returns and amended returns.

For anyone who comes across this later from a Google search, I was able to file both federal and California taxes for free using OLT.com. I found their website on the irs.gov "trusted partners" link provided in one of the replies here. I also filed a 1040 Schedule C as part of self-employed "business income", and it was still free (for me at least). In previous years, I used Taxslayer which was great and free for federal, but they wanted to charge $40 or so for filing a CA return! 😮
