We’re in the process of digging for our firepit area. When it rains, water pools in the hole and takes 2-3 days to seep through. Should I install a drainage system, or will it be fine once I put river rocks on top?

I think the pipe leading to a slope is a better idea. Catching water in a pit below your fire will likely mean constant water in that pit, if you live in a fairly rainy location, that will flood into the rest of the pit during heavy rains. When the rocks surrounding that water heat up with a fire placed on top of them, that water will boil and steam into your fire, making it burn poorly. It might also lead to those rocks cracking or exploding.

Hey all, looking to dig a hole and create a sunken fire pit this summer. My question involves drainage.
I plan on digging down about 5 feet in a 20x20 square (ish). Once the snow is gone and the ground has thawed, I’m getting locators in and then mapping the actual spot.
It’ll be a few feet off my deck, plenty far from the house.
So how do I prevent it from filling with water during heavy rainfalls, and during the spring melt?
All I had considered to this point was some river rock or pea gravel in the bottom, a couple inches deep. Anything more than that, and we’ll be swimming lol.
Thanks for any and all help.
