r/whowouldwin on Reddit: Florida & California vs Texas & New York
December 25, 2021 -

This was an insane question I posed to my D&D group last week, and figured would be fun to discuss here. For some reason Florida and California are at war with Texas and New York.

Geography remains the same which means Texas could be flanked by the Florida, and California. Texas could still benefit from their independent power grid, while California has to contend with drought. New York is out of the way which means they have a harder time sending troops, but would also be harder to invade.

The federal military is staying out of this, but the States have access to any military equipment within their borders, except for nuclear weapons. This does mean that New York gets the Statue of Liberty mech bot.

These states may make alliances with any other states. In would be in the interest of Texas to make a deal with Arizona and/or Colorado to help them in damming the Colorado River. It is one of the most important rivers in the country, and accounts for nearly half of California's water supply. Texas could dam it themsevles, but then they would risk other states joining with California.

I'm sure I am missing a lot of other considerations here. I really hope nothing like this ever comes to pass, but it's an interesting thought experiment

California vs. Florida: Which Is Better for Taxes?
April 11, 2025 - California’s system is less regressive than others because it relies more heavily on income taxes from the wealthy while offering refundable credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit, to lower earners. This contributes to relatively strong overall revenue collections without placing heavier burdens on typical households. By contrast, states like Texas and Florida rely more on consumption taxes, which fall more heavily on low-income families and tax more services.

Texas is pretty corrupt, anything big business wants, they get. State representatives don't even vote for themselves anymore, there's no campaign contribution limit to candidates. Florida corruption is endemic too: Marco Rubio was corrupt as hell, and state representatives/senators are allowed to be paid lobbyists simultaneously. I don't think we need to go much into corruption in Illinois or New York. Surprisingly California, and just maybe Texas, comes off as the least corrupt of the states.
