Unfortunately, email infrastructure costs money to run. Private/anonymous email providers don't make revenue by selling your data, so they often require you to have a paid plans. The few that offer free accounts likely will face problems like this where their free domains are blocked on various sites, because being able to sign up for an email account for free with no identity verification is very attractive to people looking to abuse it. Your choices really are using a free non-private service, paying for a private service (and using their paid-only domains or a custom one), or just dealing with some sites not accepting your email. r/emailprivacy on Reddit: Free, reliable email service that does not require phone number - recommendations?
September 3, 2024 -

Looking for a free email provider that only requires username & password for login to use as a backup if need be. I’ve been told protonmail may be a good fit, but I need to make sure it is reliable first.

Namely, the issue I’ve been having with Gmail is a “we cannot log you in or confirm this account belongs to you” error, and I need to be sure proton does not do the same; and that proton can be used to create accounts on reddit, twitch, twitter, etc with no issue. I tried using outlook first, but had the same problem.

When I opened my Gmail account 10+ years ago, UN+PW was all that was asked for. Now they ask for phone numbers and recovery emails, which should be fine, but it’s causing unexpected problems. More than a few times these new requirements have lead me to enter all of my login info, be told “you cannot login & we cannot confirm this account belongs to you”; then try to use my phone number for verification, only to be told “this number is associated with too many accounts and cannot be used” (2 accounts btw).

I only have 1 phone number, so this means I can’t login at all until I try again later and get lucky. This also makes me worried I WON’T get lucky at some point, and will be locked out forever (since the same username, password, and number I’ve had for 10 years is apparently not good enough).

Furthermore, having the same phone number be saved to both of my email accounts isn’t really ideal imo anyway. One of my emails is used for banking, medical information, government ids + ssn, etc.; and the other is used for twitch, twitter, social media and whatever. Having my phone number be associated with my social security number and my twitter account seems irresponsible and counterintuitive; but I need an email for both, and google has decided to make it mandatory to save a phone number to all google accounts.

TLDR: is protonmail a good choice to use for social media accounts, and is it secure? Is there any way to be permanently locked out of a protonmail account? If it’s not a good choice, can anyone recommend something more reliable or useful? Thank you.

I'm researching about my options to move away from Gmail. I'm sticking to free options though which limits my choices for sure. I need a multi-crossing platform so I can access my emails through iOS,Android and Windows web browser. So they should have either their own app in those eco-systems or able to add their email address to a private thirdparty email client app .

There are so many options and it's ginna take so much time if i want to figure out by myself which ones suit me. Can you let me know please? I need atleast 5 Free email addresses.

There are so many providers. Proton,Tuta,Infomaniak, fastmail, mailbox, fairmail,k-9 etc.... Which ones match what i need?

With the sun setting of skiff I've been looking for a new email provider that isn't google or Microsoft. Privacy stuff would be nice but I don't need end to end encryption, the features I'm really looking for are quick aliases like skiff had and maybe custom domains. I'd be happy to pay, but anything over 5AUD a month is a little overboard.

Any suggestions welcome!

Edit: I get it you guys like proton but I'm looking for something under 5AUD

January 28, 2025 - And that matters in what ? A paid privacy email will have your emails encrypted. A free service got your entire emails all Infos in them ( so also all data including like payments , purchase whatever ) and your ip which 100% identifies you.

Hi there r/emailprivacy.
For context, I've used the popular ones, Gmail, Outlook, Aol, etc...
I've been testing for a while just trying to find something reliable and that isn't as tedious as another.
Recently started using Mail.com, though after putting a password in exactly as I remembered entering it and then encountering trouble getting in this morning, I've kinda been wondering.

I have heard numerous complaints saying that Mail.com is sometimes super unreliable, and that it's easy for someone to get access to, but I wanna hear some suggestions from others.

I have tried most of the email providers out there - Protonmail, Fastmail, Zoho, Mailfence, Runbox, Mailbox.org, etc. I have my own domain. I can never settle on one and just go back Google Workspace which I don't like.

I have tried Skiff and it is not ready for prime time. Outlook stinks now when trying to use a personal domain. Tutanota doesn't let you import emails and is slow to improve things.

My needs - easy import my old mails, good webmail interface, good calendar, I like being able to create extra email addresses that can be disposable, app for my iphone, reasonable price for storage. I don't use a client - all web based.

I don't have a problem spending for a good product.

Thanks

Would be nice but not a dealbreaker - an alternative to Google Docs

Old man yells at sky, I remember even 10-15 years ago, you could just get a simple email without having to give your phone number or pay. Then yahoo started the cancerous trend of asking for phone number, and the rest is history.

The only email provider I've found that doesn't require phone or payment is protonmail, but they ban you if you use their emails to sign up for too many things so I'd rather not (not that I spam sign ups, but I have a few different accounts for various platforms is all). Google requires phone number.

Any others?

Thanks!

I'm trying to switch to European solutions. Recently, I stopped using Chrome and wanted to stop using Gmail as well. I used the link that lists all the European variants (https://european-alternatives.eu/), but the ones that seemed most convincing were all paid. I also searched in the sub but found varying responses. I don't need anything fancy, just something to register on sites that require it. And it needs to be free because I'm a student and not working, so it doesn't seem right to spend money on email. Any suggestions?

Hello, I've recently started my de-google journey and I've been struggling to find a mail provider that is free and in which I can have multiple accounts on. I've seen many people talk about proton but I know that their free plan only offers one account and I'd have to pay if I wanted to have more. Do you guys have any suggestions?

I also tried to look into Skiff but I saw that they merged (I think) with motion and is not available anymore as a mail service.

I need multiple accounts for job purposes, I need to separate my stuff because having a single email makes me go nuts trying to search for stuff and trying to delete all the spam messages/all ads and promotional stuff, and if I try to unsubscribe from them they always somehow come back.

Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you in advance

So you want to have features while not paying for them with either your data or money... Free accounts will always have some limitations. You could have a look at the list here and maybe go with multiple free accounts from different providers. https://european-alternatives.eu/category/email-providers
