After a long hiatus, I'm getting back into photography. I was on team Canon prior to my long break and had a 40d with quite a nice collection of glass. I have a few primes and a few L zooms. A big issue was that the weight of the gear usually had me leaving it at home and just using my phone. meh.
I have an upcoming trip and I'd like to get some new gear prior to the trip. I'm not going to do any significant video filming and will focus on people and places mostly. No tough sports shots or anything like that.
That takes me to my choices. In doing my research and it seems like the EF mounts are dead. I see a few options. One, I get an old 90d and everything is compatible. Two, I get an R and need the adaptor. Three, i switch camps to Fuji, get a X-5T w/18-55 and sell my old gear. I'm leaning to the Fuji thinking I get a nice build and photo quality, better portability, lots of manual controls, etc at the expense of AF deficiencies and joining a new ecosystem.
Thoughts?

Fuji is aps-c so you will get better quality by upgrading to a full frame canon. You wont get a lot of difference compared to 90D, especially losing your lenses and being stuck with shitty kit one instead. Also despite 90D is technically a good camera, getting it for its price where other options like R8 or D750 (may be even cheaper than 90D, if you are that ok to switch systems) exist is weird today. EF lenses are totally compatible with adapter, and as dude above said lenses will work even better than they did on DSLR because AF capability of dual-pixel ii digic X bodies is much more accurate and they send way clearer signal to the lens. Dont get R or RP, start from R6 or R8.

I plan on buying a portrait lens soon – and there’s a lot of options to choose from as Fujifilm offers several budget-friendly compact lenses as well as more premium lenses for professionals.

I'd skip Canon if you're going APSC. Their APSC RF mount cameras - R7 and R10 - are pricey with very few available lenses. The EF-M mount offerings like the M100, M6, M50 etc have more available lenses, but haven't been updated for years. It's a dying system, in my view. I'd be surprised if more lenses and cameras were developed for it moving forward. If you're going APSC, the big question is Fuji or Sony. Each will bring you some great quality of life features that the other won't, so it's essentially a question of what sort of experience you want. Personally, I feel like Fuji cameras are more enjoyable to use, especially for photographers. Sony cameras on the other hand have some technical advantages but many of them are more relevant for folks interested in video. Naturally you can do video work with Fuji and photo work with Sony too, but the big question is what your priority is. For a beginner photographer, my recommendation would always be Fuji. You need a camera that's compact so you can carry it everywhere, that's fun to use so you want to carry it everywhere, and that produces images that you're satisfied with quickly to provide that positive reinforcement in the form of quick gratification. Fuji does that, with the great colours in camera even without editing.

It depends on what Canon body you're switching from. My Canon experience: I've used pretty much every pro and semi-pro digital body since the 5D Classic and have been shooting with Canon FD bodies since 2006. Fuji's control scheme was easy for me to get used to, but that's because I've shot with Canon FD bodies for so long that it's second nature. The only thing that got me at the beginning was that the aperture ring goes in the opposite direction. I find that mirrorless cameras, in-general, tend to have a slight delay and lag. They're not quite as responsive as the old Canon DSLRs, but I find the higher-end Fujis to be overall faster and more accurate. The EVF on Fujis is standard-fare for most mirrorless, but they're still very good on the high-end bodies. I liked them better than the EVFs, on early Canon mirrorless full-frame, and are much better than what was on the Sony A7III and earlier. Sensor-performance on Fujis was so close to Canons, even their full-frame DSLRs, that I didn't even consider it as a deciding factor. Depending on the body, one may be slightly better than the other, but I honestly can barely tell. Canon ergonomics are second-to-none imo, and certainly a big deciding factor for many. Fujis are nice but their design is certainly more form over function, but I believe they strike a good balance. The one thing that really took me some time to get around and I had become accustomed to was the lack of Custom Mode dial positions that you find on Canons. C1, C2, C3 and such. Most Fujis don't have that and it really cuts down on your speed and flexibility if your work requires it. Personally, I was at a point that I no longer needed it so much, but it was a noticeable loss. If you have any specific questions, let me know.

It comes down to this: if you’re a professional and need a tank of a camera that’s super reliable, go Canon. If you’re more of a hobbyist, Fuji is better

I’ve been using Canon since I got into photography around 15 years ago. Just a hobbyist — mostly portraits and night landscapes. I’m currently on the Canon RP with a few lens, but honestly, I’m starting to feel like the RF system is getting too expensive for what it offers.
I’ve been considering a switch — either to Sony (maybe an A7 series) or Fujifilm X series. Both seem to offer more affordable and flexible lens options.
Would love to hear from others who’ve made the switch. What do you think — Sony or Fuji?

Been for over twenty five years a photographer and I promise you, at a certain point, there’s not really a difference. It’s just a question of taste and habits. Imho is the camera anyway secondary, what’s really counting are lenses and mostly skills. Sorry if I disappoint you and let the crowd howl, but in my experience and opinion, that’s it. Edit: I’m still on EF on R system. So no need for newer, really expensive RF Lenses

I have the xt5 and man, you’ll be so disappointed in the autofocus. My firmwares are all up to date, using kit 18-55 lens, consistently front and back focus using eye af and even af-s on objects in medium light levels at close distance focusing. I’m still keeping it, love the colours and handling and small lens sizes.

Hey.
I have been into photography for couple of years now and i currently have an x-t20 with some fuji lenses. I really like that but i want to go to something better (possible 35mm sensor). Thinking of going to Canon eos R. Would it be a bad decision? I love the compactness of fuji but i will be using prime lenses anyway with canon as well. You say you want something better, better how? Fuji make some great cameras and lenses, as much as I love canon and have a ton of canon gear there main difference between the two is canon has better AF and offers full frame cameras vs. APS-C. The quality difference between full frame and APS-C is one stop of high ISO noise performance. For probably 95%+ of amateur photographers full frame vs. APS-C is not the limiting factor. It is technique, vision, skill, composition etc.. If you cannot say Fuji is failing me in specific ways then upgrading to Canon full frame will likely just but some retail therapy and learning the ins and outs of a new system. Personally I love Fuji's film sims and how great their strait out of camera jpeg's are. I wish canon had something similar.
