There are three basic requirements for the project itself:

project must be named group.gitlab.io (if you want it to be the base domain)
job must create artifact in public directory
job must be called pages

Most likely it's the last one that needs fixing since your job is currently called deploy-pages. Simply rename that to pages.

You'll know when you got everything working because under Settings > Pages, it will tell you the link where it's published to.

For me initially activating GL pages took about 24h hours. After that updates are instant. Also make sure to activate GL pages in the settings for that repo.

gitlab.io is a free static hosting service for repos in gitlab.com: files that can be hosted statically are HTML files and MD (markdown syntax) files. most of the time, repos are not equivalent to a static web site. you need a transformation task (static site generation) script instructions in a file .gitlab-ci.yml without explicit transformation script, the site automatically output the index.html or index.md or readme.md as the default page of the site. I finally figured it out (although I would still classify this as a bug on the part of GitLab).

The ID needs to be url-encoded, which is why I had replaced / in the repository name by %2F. However the character . should not have been a problem (- in the former URL did not cause any problem). However, replacing . by %2E gives expected (correct) results.

I think this is a bug because:

This behavior is not documented (which characters are allowed?).
The URL without the domain name works flawlessly even without encoding ., including the API to add new domains (which also takes domain as a form parameter, and not in URL).

TL;DR

Using:

pallavagarwal07%2Fpallavagarwal07%2Egitlab%2Eio

instead of

pallavagarwal07%2Fpallavagarwal07.gitlab.io

in the URL makes it work.
