If it's not asking for a recovery e-mail, I'd question if you have one configured. And since you didn't mention it, I assume there's no recovery phone. I didn't have a recovery email or phone number attached either.
This was the root cause of all your problems. If you'd had these, Google could have done a phone verification and had you back into the account in seconds. If the problem because worse, forcing you into account recovery, you'd have been able to prove ownership.
The original suspicious activity may have been a false positive by Google. Everything after that was preventable.
I'm really amazed that trying a different browser worked. I wonder if clearing cookies would have helped in the original browser.

I do not have a recovery or phone number currently or I do. If you did, the recovery process would ask about it. So you probably don't, which means you have no way to prove ownership of the account to get it back. Switching to another provider may make you feel better, but you did this to yourself.
