How do you feel about Grammarly?
Some people in my department ask students to run their work through Grammarly before submitting it. Others eschew it. I personally have no problem with using Grammarly to spot words that were misspelled, commas that weren't closed, etc. There are three problems that have emerged with Grammarly recently: Grammarly makes suggestions for changes in syntax and diction that target a very specific tone, and the tone that Grammarly goes for is distinct in its unnuanced, business-memo style. For instance, Grammarly would like me to change "There are two problems that have emerged recently" to "two problems have emerged recently." These may mean the same thing, but one is more conversational and explanatory in its tone and Grammarly's suggested edit is a bit more impersonal and brusque. This seems small, but compound it over an entire paper--especially one where tone matters, like personal narrative or analysis--and it seriously damages the voice of the piece. Grammarly has recently introduced a new feature that offers to write for students. Obviously, this is plagiarism, but more problematically, it strips away the students' voices and robs them of the opportunity to learn to express themselves. This is problematic for a number of reasons. Finally, something in Grammarly's algorithms and AI detectors' algorithms is clashing, and documents for which Grammarly was used as an editor are causing AI detectors to ding all over the place. I've had several pieces flagged as plagiarized where all the student had done was use Grammarly to check punctuation. With all that said, this is my advice: Ask each and every individual professor what their policy on Grammarly is. Once you enter the workplace, you will have employers who want you to use AI, perhaps for efficiency, and employers who forbid the use of AI, perhaps for privacy reasons. It's good practice to inquire specifically about AI policies in each discrete context. If Grammarly is allowed, feel free to accept Grammarly's corrections regarding the spelling, spacing, punctuation, and possibly grammar of the words you have written. Be very cautious about accepting Grammarly's suggestions altering your diction or syntax. In other words, if it tries not just to correct the spelling or punctuation of your words but to actually change your words, be very cautious of allowing it to do that. It's subtly changing the tone, and possibly the meaning, of your writing, and it's increasing the likelihood that you'll be flagged as having had AI do your writing. Absolutely do not use the "write it for me" feature. Just don't. If you confirm that your professor allows Grammarly for proofreading purposes, state with your submission that you used it for that. That way if it gets flagged, your professor already has some context for what might be causing that "false positive." Good luck navigating this territory, and thank you for caring enough to ask. Paraphrasing changes sentence structure, word choice, and sentence length to convey the same meaning. · Rephrasing may involve more substantial changes to the original text, including changing the order of sentences or the overall structure of the text. · Rewording is changing i
