Seasonal Lawn Care Tips for Houston HOAs: Maintaining Green Spaces Year-Round
Houston’s mild winters, though less harsh, still require attention to prevent issues such as weed invasion and pest infestations. Weeds can thrive in mild temperatures, taking advantage of the dormant grass to spread quickly. Without proper winter care, lawns can become patchy and weak, setting a poor foundation for the Spring growth period.

r/houston on Reddit: Lawn care tip thread?
9 August 2012 -
So I have recently posted to r/DIY and r/lawncare in an attempt to try to get some help with some lawn issues I'm having but it just occurred to me to check r/houston for a lawn care guide/thread since this is the area I live in and proper lawn care will differ by location. Well, I didn't find anything so I thought I would try to start one.
So how about it? Anyone have any tips on how to care for St. Augustine (or other grasses) in our area? Does anyone have a fertilization schedule they can swear by or advise against? Water schedule recommendations etc...?

Yes, I've been caring for my & my parents lawn for 35 years. Make sure you never use a Weed & Feed!!! Follow Randy Lemmons advice. Here is a LINK to his fertilization schedule & LAWN TIPS . Most of the products can be bought at Houston Garden Centers. Unless you are buying fire ant killer, you will not find the stuff you need at Lowe's or Home Depot so don't even bother. Make sure you always have fire ant killer around. Fire ant mounds pop up all the time. Watch out for Virgina Buttonweed & Carpet Grass, these 2 weed will kill your lawn FAST if you don't get down on your knees & pull ALL of it up. Use Bonide Weed Beater for Southern Lawns to kill weeds in your lawn. It's the best for St. Augustine. Watering schedule LINK

I too am curious to hear about this. Houston weather is weird. I have knowledge on growing plans from a Houston-specific book, but the author hates grass so he doesn't really discuss it. :/

Treatment: You can treat chinch bugs with insecticide or by encouraging natural predators like ladybugs to take care of the problem.

What would you do in general to keep up with the lawn? Aerate? Fertilizer? What am I missing? TIA for your insights!! ... You have what looks like St. Augustine and a lot of weeds. Find something to kill the weeds that are in there, and then help the St. Augustine spread in the spring/summer. It doesn't like a ton of fertilizer, so it takes a while. You may consider some sod pieces for the larger areas that have no grass. You likely won't see too much dormancy in Houston, but the growth will slow down.

Tomorrow (or mid-week) I'll apply Spectracide's Immunox Lawn Disease Control. There could be insect infestation as well, so at least I have that under control. The plan is to get a soil sample, and get back a fertilization schedule back on track. Is there anywhere to send a soil sample for analysis in the SouthWest? Click to expand... Just google "soil testing houston" and you will find a university that will do it for you.Yes a regular program is needed like I mentioned before. Some overseeding might be needded as well.

I dealt with alot dalliasgrass / crabgrass in my old home in houston. If its mostly contained, hand pull it, and I would recommend getting like a hand trowel to dig up under the roots of the weed to pull it out easier. Orr you can try getting a small cup and sponge/brush and selectively brush the roundup on the weed portion themselves. Just be mindup with the application, roundup will kill anything it touches. I liked the roundup idea when I had 15,000 sqft of lawn and just fired my lawn mower guy and decided to take up lawncare myself.
